Gluttony & Religion

Recommended Posts

Ahhh, why the heck not. Let's cover this one too.

For those in the dark:

Main Entry: glut·tony

Function: noun

Inflected Form(s): plural -ton·ies

1 : excess in eating or drinking

2 : greedy or excessive indulgence

Now everyone can participate.

It's against my religion, as I'm sure it is many. It makes sense to me, what about you? You don't over-eat, over-indulge and *hopefully* you won't get overweight. Unless it's just in your genetic make-up as such. Or your health dictates otherwise (diabetes/throid disease/etc).

My Grandmother is an alcoholic and a chain smoker. When my mom gripes at her about smoking, she says that over-eating is a sin too. My mom is somewhat overweight - not obese or anything. This burns her ass when my Grandma (her mom) spouts out this crap to her. My mom explains to her that her over-eating doesn't affect my grandma, but my Grandma's smoke affects her.

I feel like I over-ate at lunch by the way, in case anyone was wondering. I'm not trying to stir the pot....really. :D

Thoughts on the whole gluttony thing? Are you guilty?

 So did I. I'm not sure I have a problem with gluttony per a religious aspect, but I do have issues with gluttony and obesity. It's not just with humans either - when I see an extremely overweight cat, like mine, I feel a moment of disgust. I love him, but the way he engorges himself to the point of vomiting disgusts me. When I see big fat dogs that can't walk because they're legs won't carry them - it disgusts me.

Now that I think of it, I have fat issues, which is directly connected with my own chub. :p

Over indulgence in anything is bad for ya.

It's not what goes into your mouth that makes you a bad person, it's what come out.

but i think that in a religious aspect.... Gluttony is strongely related to greed, and lack of self control, and relates to lack of self respect.

and that Gluttony is more a Mind-set than actual physical actions.

I feel like I over-ate, no doubt. If I was buying, I probably would've eaten just a 'lite' sized....but no....the boss man was buying. So I splurged. Stone me!!

also, some animals will gorge themselves when presented with copious amounts of food. as they may not see food again, in the wild, for a long time.

I think that sepating ourselves from animals(beasts) is HUGE in religion...and that is what a lot of sins stems from...self control issues.

In human terms, does that mean I cannot hump your leg? Thanks in advance...

If you have a cat that can't quit, then you need to give that cat less food.

You're not a very responsible pet-owner are you? You're his 'mom', and he is completely dependent on you for his health and well- being. Have you taken him for a check-up lately? No doubt the Vet is going to be appalled at how much food you've given the sweet, innocent animal who now suffers from obesity because of you.

He was my husband's cat - they were five years old when I met my husband. He's been to the vet and we've tried so many different types of food it's not even funny. Now we're working with the vet on having him eat just wet food instead of dry because he thinks he can't burn the carbs that are found in the dry food.

I got a bunch of toys to try and make him a little more active. I spend about two hours every day playing with my cats so that they get some exercise.

He's difficult though because he doesn't really move - he just lies on his bad and rolls from side to side when I try to get him to jump around and chase the feathers on the end of the stick. I've got the litter box downstairs and when I see him in the stairs I chase him up just to get his little heat pumping and burn some calories.

I've posted about this before - I don't know what else to do and hopefully wet food will help. We go for another weigh in July. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he's at least lost a few pounds! Libby may be helping too since she tends to chase him now and that gets his little butt moving.

I blame my husband for his gluttony - he had them when he was single and he was never home so the cats would just have bowls of food in the house and not much interaction with him. I figure the male got bored and turned to food. Now he's obsessed with it.

Thanks so much for your concern. I really appreciate it. I'll keep you posted on how it goes with the vet.

Unfortunately, it's not that easy. I should probably point out that when I say we, I mean my husband and I, but in all reality my husband does nothing with the cats.

I get up at 6:00 am and feed them. First Libby and Ariel and then Merlin - I try to give them a head start because they eat slow and Merlin will take their food. I even put them on the dining room chairs, even though they've completely destroyed the fabric, so that he can't just walk over and push them so easily.

Then while they're eating, I give them clean water, all three bowls, clean their litter box, get their toys together in the living room so they can play while we're gone, go back and pick up Merlin's bowl and then clean up whatever is left that Libby and Ariel haven't eaten. They're both fussy with food and they like to eat a little bit all day long, while Merlin eats all his food right away. I've spoken to the vet about this - how to deal with having a nine year old cat that eats everything and a nine year old and a four month old cat that eat a little bit at a time, but all day long.

So we're doing the diet wet food and the leaving a little bit of the diet dry food out. I had to discuss this a well with the vet because I'm giving Ariel and Merlin the senior diet and I thought Libby should be eating kitten food. Well Ariel and Merlin naturally think Libby's food tastes better so they eat her dry food up with all the extra fat/carbs. Per the vet, they're all eating the diet dry food. I leave just a little bit in three bowls, one on the floor for Merlin and two in chairs. I bet on the fact that he's too lazy to get in the chairs to eat theirs, but some days he isn't and those are the days he vomits.

I should also mention that I have to hide all boxes of tissues because Merlin will eat those, too.

Then I get ready, do one more kitty check, go to work and come home. And it starts all over.

I feed the cats in order, I give them fresh water, I clean the litter box and then once they're done I pick up all the bowls and start the play time. Libby gets most of it because she's so active. When I'm done with her, I play with Ariel and then Merlin.

I pass out about 10 pm to be awaken at 2 am with Libby wanting attention. She gets in my hair and purrs and kneads. So while I'm trying to get her to calm down, I have Ariel on my lap that I'm trying to get to settle in and about forty-five minutes later, everyone is sleep, including me. Then around 4 am I'm up again. Libby moving around, Ariel getting irritated at Libby, Merlin crying for food. I toss and turn for a few hours then get up and start the day over.

I should also mention on weekends they get their cleaning - I brush them, then I get a hot papertowel and rub them down. After that I give them body massages for their muscles since they're getting old. Libby hasn't really started liking the massages, yet - she's too active to sit that long if she's not kneading.

Throw in the trips for new food every week, more toys, pet houses, pet condos, and trips to the vet when they have to go and you might just say I spoil my cats.

I love my cats - they're my children. I take wonderful care of them. And every day I'm ****ing tired because I don't sleep worth **** and I refuse to kick my cats out of the room and not allow them to sleep with mommy. I did it once and they completely tore up the rug under the door trying to get in. I can't handle the image of them reaching for me and not being allowed to be near me.

So instead, I'm tired every GD day and I do it all by myself. Thanks for your concern.

lordy. it's reasons like this that i will never allow an animal in my home. (well that and the fact that i used to love animals until my roommates ruined for me completely. pigs---the roommates, not the pets.)

is it worth it? really?
