Would you wait?

Recommended Posts

My friends boyfriend is leaving for a years work experience in Europe soon. I asked if she would wait for him - she isn't sure. I laughed and turned to my boyfriend, saying, "I bet you wouldn't!!" just having a joke. But he simply said, "No, I don't think I would."

Am I silly to get upset about a hypothetical question???? I KNOW it's silly, considering that it isn't going to happen - but I thought he loved me (I KNOW he does) and surely if you're in love, you'd wait? It's just hurt my feelings a little bit - upset me a bit! I know that with someone I loved, there wouldn't even be a QUESTION of whether I'd wait!! Of COURSE I would!!

I asked a couple of people (we all work together) just having a jokey conversation, and most of them said no. A lot of them said, "What if you meet someone better?" How can there BE someone better than the one you're in love with???? There ISN'T anyone better, if you're truly in love.

I don't get it - I would do anything to avoid losing my true love - I wouldn't just go, "Oh well, never mind."

Does anyone understand how this is upsetting in a way? Or am I just an old-fashioned romantic? It just feels like none of these people have ever REALLY been in love!!!

Thanks :) Amy x

Yes, in a way a hypothetical question can be upsetting. The answer to the question depends on a lot of things. What is your perception of true love? How would you explain it in things it does to a person? Different perceptions of these things lead to different outcomes. And just because people are in a relationship, it does not mean that they think that they have found their true love.
