Problematic Staff

Hi I am on this new job for about 3 weeks. I have a staff who has given me a lot of headache over the past few weeks. Stubborn, careless, having communication problem, not following instruction, irresponsible, lazy and always give me wrong information (I need to report to headquarter on regular basis). I am afraid she'll directly/indirectly jeopardise my performance.

I have received a lot of complaints from other colleagues and even my predecessor about her work attitude. They advise me to "ask her to leave". However, I am still new (I don't really rely on her work though as her work quality is in question), will that affect my reputation? I have spoken to my other staff, they have problem working with her too. However, one of the staff asked me to give her more time to improve. (Anyway, she has been asked to leave by her ex-boss and in the end, was given a 2nd chance till I joined).

How would you guys handle this?

I would schedule a meeting with her and just say, that as a new person (you) you want to go over the expectations of the her. You can highlight what is unacceptable that she has done and explain that you rely on her toget it right and that if you need to be constantly re-checking things and he work, you will need to make a change.

You don't want to come in high handed the first three weeks and fire her. I think giving her fair warning (documented of course) and a second chance is honorable. After all it could just be a personality clash that was the problem with th eold boss
