Do these statements really mean anything?

Recommended Posts

I have a friend from a previous job that I left about a year ago. We've stayed in touch since then, and I've only ever seen him as a friend. But he's said a few things recently, and I'm wondering if they mean anything.

Once we were out getting coffee, and he asked me if I'm interested in anyone. I told him that there was one guy I could be interested in, and talked about all the nice things this guy has done for me. My friend then paused for a second and said, "So if I did those things, you'd be interested in me too." This statement most certainly took me by surprise, and so I couldn't really come up with a response.

Another time, we were out at a party and I was chatting with a group of people. My friend was with a different group of people, but he was not too far away. Some time during the party, he came up to me and said "Are you having fun with those people?" When I said "yes," he said, "I was watching you the whole time and it didn't seem like you were enjoying yourself much. You should come hangout with us." Once again, I was taken by surprise. Firstly, because I truly was enjoying myself. Secondly, I had no idea he was watching me!

Other than this though, I haven't really noticed any other signs, or perhaps I never paid attention. He does call and text me quite often, but I've always taken that as a friendly gesture. Occasionally, he'll tease me by gently pushing me or lightly kicking my foot under the table.

Is there a chance this guy is interested or am I misinterpreting his words?

There's a pretty good chance he's interested. In my experience, men don't make the effort to stay in touch with women unless they are waiting for the right moment to make a move. Truly platonic friendships between men and women are possible, of course, but it's rare.
