Naive
My Sister, my sister Please tell me what you guys think about this: Yesterday my sister went to do her grocery shopping and she loves to call me while she does that for some reason Well, she remembered that her housekeeper told her to get something to clean her marble counters (by the way, the cleaning lady should do that but that's a different story). So my sister is looking for it but can't find it so I tell her to look for an employee....NO.....she looks for someone that is also buying things there. She saw a Hispanic lady with lots of cleaning stuff so she for some odd reason immediately assumed that she cleaned house She tells the lady in Spanish, "excuse ma'am, do you clean houses right because......." and the lady cut her off by saying, "no I clean MY house not houses" I could not believe what I was hearing!!! How could she asked a random person that, specially if the person was Hispanic like us!!! The lady probably thought my sister was racist against her own people or just plain stupid!!!! That was such a BIG stereotype. I told her that I could not believe she had asked the lady such a thing. I also told her that I feel that now she feels so much superior than other people and she does not remember where she was a little over 2 years ago! She just shrugged me off
Merin
Jeez Some People are just this way.. it boggles the mind. I remember when I worked for Estee' Lauder Cosmetic's, one of my friends worked at the Lancome' counter across from me and this Lady walked up to her while we were talking she said "Excuse me, perhaps you can help me.. My BEST Friend is getting married and having a bridal shower *she had 2 night gowns in her hand* which one do YOU think she would like better?" Now.. My Girlfriend is African American.. not that should make a difference but it does to this story.. my GF said "Well I'm not sure which one your friend would like the best, but I like this one.. what do you think Merin?" I liked the other one better and said so.. the Lady said "Well I'm going to get this one *the one my friend selected* because my Friend is black so I'm sure you have a better idea of what she would like" WTF!? My Friend and I couldn't believe what she had just said! It showed ignorance.. and for real, this was suppose to be her BEST FRIEND? Whats up!?!
ReluctantRomeo
Well, I agree it's kind of stupid. And Merin's encounter was just plain weird. But maybe your sister felt more comfortable asking a fellow hispanic and just ending up saying something stupid? Some people feel insecure approaching offical types - even shop employees... My sister is not the shy type so I am sure she was not scared or shy about asking an employee. She has just gotten weird and offensive!!! I went shopping this weekend and she actually had the audacity to tell me that I should not go to that mediocre mall that I go to, for pete's sake, she worked at that mall for about 3 YEARS!!!! Once it was out of the Ladies mouth that my Friend would have a better idea of what her friend would like and her reason for believing so.. both of us were like this >> then My Friend said to her "Well just because your Friend and I are of the same colour would not mean I have a better idea of what she would prefer.. since she is your BEST FRIEND I should think you would have the best idea of what her taste is" This seemed to go past this Woman.. she just left the other gown she didn't want on the counter and walked away. It was crazy

Sad but true: people are often most snobby and condescending about things they have risen from. Maybe you should ask her if she fancies hanging out with some of her ex-colleagues
quankanne
I dunno, naive ... my big sister has always had a terrible problem with "engage mouth, disengage brain" syndrome and would say whatever popped into her head without thinking how stupid it made her sound. I'm guessing it's because she liked the attention, so she shared her opinions like it was free candy! she's gotten better in the past couple of years, but she's still capable of some doozies and it drives me nuts at times.
