LeeLoo
Every once in a while, I get hit with a dizzy spell that can last anywhere from a few seconds, to twenty minutes. I haven't had a long lasting one since April until tonight. It's only just starting to subside. And once it's gone, I feel a little sick, but not nauseous. I can't figure out why I keep getting them, even if they are few and far between. After the one I had in April, I made a doctor's appointment. We talked about it for a little bit and she looked into each of my ears with her little light. But, she said it wasn't really anything to worry about, and didn't think much into it. I'm only asking now because I've just had another. Do any of you know of a reason why I'd get a dizzy spell that would last more than a few seconds or minutes? I can't really bring forth any conclusions. I have a doctor's appointment with my new doctor on Wednesday for something else, so I can bring it up to her then if necessary. I was just curious if any of you had any insight you'd like to share.
moimeme
Dizziness can be a symptom of many things - that's the problem. Unless your doc does tests it's hard to tell. It could be Meniere's disease or it could be high blood pressure or any number of things. For sure ask the new doc about it.
Craig
Sorry, no insight here but have a look at this page on Trouble Getting A Diagnosis. http://www.vestibular.org/trouble.html
nightskyreader
Are there any associated symptoms? Does it happen after you stand up or turn your head a certain way? Any hearing loss? Recent upper respiratory tract infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, etc? I'm assuming you didn't have an ear infection (otitis media) being that the first doc didn't see anything abnormal on the otoscope exam. It's probably just labrynthitis, which could be an infection but usually it just happens when you get little stones that precipitate in the semi-circular canals of your inner ear. Sometimes they break loose and float around in there, crashing into the little hair cells in there that tell your brain your head is spinning around. You should seek further evaluation, but until then I would recommend keeping some Meclizine handy. You can buy it over the counter- I think it's in Dramamine but you can ask your pharmacist to be sure. It typically comes in 25mg tablets. Pop 1-2 of those at the first onset of your symptoms and get ready for a nap.
moimeme
I'm sure nightskyreader has the best of intentions, but please do not take any drugs recommended to you on this or any other forum by a stranger. Your own doctor is the best person to decide what you ought and ought not do about your symptoms. There are some fairly serious conditons that have dizziness as a symptom and you'd want to be sure that that's been checked out before you just pop some drugs.
nightskyreader
I'm a licensed doctor, but moimeme is right. I could be a quack for all any of you know. I definitely recommend the further evaluation, as I initially said. Call your doctor and even if she can't see you right away, ask her if there is anything you can take for your symptoms in the interim.
