NeotericJack Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Why don't some women, married for decades, wear wedding bands? I can understand that some physical reason can cause it but, in the absence of that, what else could? I'm thinking of one person whose husband doesn't wear a wedding band either. Is that a sign the marriage has failed?

Is that a sign the marriage has failed? Means nothing. I didn't wear one for years because I didn't like my band, and don't like jewelry in general. 1
Popsicle Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 The only thing I dislike more than married women who don't wear wedding bands is married men who don't wear wedding bands. 4
CarrieT Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 She might be allergic to metal. She might hate jewelry. I am a relative newlywed (three years) and make jewelry. I made my husband a gorgeous band and he never wears it because he just doesn't like wearing jewelry. Don't read too much into it. 2
Author NeotericJack Posted August 28, 2016 Author Posted August 28, 2016 A woman who doesn't wear a wedding ring might attract unwanted attention. How much of a concern should that be? Conversely, I've read that a wedding ring can attract women to men. It's almost like a seal of approval. If one woman will have him, maybe another woman would do well to check him out. Does that seem possible?

Conversely, I've read that a wedding ring can attract women to men. It's almost like a seal of approval. If one woman will have him, maybe another woman would do well to check him out. Does that seem possible? Lots of things attract unwanted attention. It is pretty much impossible for an attractive person to prevent unwanted attention. A wedding ring sure isn't going to do it. A mature, loyal person (woman or man) deals with unwanted attention appropriately. It is not a problem. 2
oldshirt Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 I wear a wristwatch to tell the time. Other than that I have never wore any kind of rings, jewelry, accessories etc etc I got married in the fall of 1995 and wore my wedding ring initially. About a year or so later I lost some weight and my ring got kind of lose. I haven't wore it since. It just means I don't wear rings or jewelry etc. It has virtually no reflection whatsoever on the state of my marriage or how I conduct myself as a married man.

Let's suppose, though, that a wedding ring marks the woman as someone's property (and I hate to put it in those terms so give me an alternative.) Wouldn't she be inviting attention she didn't want if she didn't wear it? 1

They aren't expected to wear wedding rings. Women are. I always thought so, anyway.

Wouldn't she be inviting attention she didn't want if she didn't wear it? Ergh, what? Just because a woman is married doesn't mean she's property. Hello, problematic, 19th century mindset. A wedding ring is a symbol of two people's union. But that's it—it's just a symbol. Whether a married person (man or woman) chooses to wear one or not, it's not necessarily a reflection of the relationship itself. I'm curious to hear the specifics of the situation you're describing. Why do you think it's such a big deal? 7

xxoo Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 They don't care. They only think about themselves. And men are expected to wear wedding rings. Nah, my husband isn't expected to wear a ring. 1
basil67 Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 My father lost his wedding ring in the surf on his honeymoon in 1964. He didn't replace it. The marriage is still strong. I really don't understand why the wearing of a ring is of concern to anybody outside of that marriage. 5
Popsicle Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Because you think they should be marked "off limits?" Yes Popsicle
xxoo Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Why is her voice not enough? Who wears a ring at the beach? Working out? Working with hands? There are lots of places I wouldn't wear a ring. I'm no less "taken". 2
Midwestmissy Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 I stopped wearing mine when I suddenly got a rash after 18 years. Ends up it was the week his affair started. I adore that ring, we designed it together but I can't put it on - it's been 4 years. My husband lost the first one in the ocean, the second in the snow (I was present both times) and he didn't get a third until he confessed to the affair. So he wears one, mine is in the drawer. And it does invite attention to not wear one. But it's pretty easy to shut down advances quickly. Go figure. 1
dichotomy Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Honestly I don't think wedding bands stop alot of people from cheating or unwanted attention. Most people who cheat know the person is married. My wife went parts of a year without her ring due to medical health issues causing up and down swelling. She did not seem to mind, but I saw it after a while as an issue for me - not cheating but about respect and honor. I eventually solved the issue with the ring by modifying it to accommodate changes in finger size - as a gift. In fairness I also have a temporary skin condition and have not worn my ring for a week, but will put it on as soon as I can. I also have a silicone ring for training.
Author NeotericJack Posted August 29, 2016 Author Posted August 29, 2016 Why is that? Custom. Tradition. That's just the way it is. It tells men they are not available.

Why do you think it's such a big deal? A coworker does not wear a wedding ring. Other women with the same job do wear their rings. The job, itself, does not create any reason not to wear a ring. Her Facebook profile has very little information but she does say she is married. It just seems odd to proclaim the marriage in one place but not in another. I've never met her husband but I have seen a picture and he's not wearing a ring. It just seems odd so I thought I'd ask if there was some custom I didn't know about.

Certainly, some physical conditions can create a reason not to wear a ring. I was thinking more of the case wear no such condition existed.
Arieswoman Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 My husband doesn't wear his wedding ring at work as a safety precaution, as the job involves operating some machinery. He doesn't wear it at home either but puts it on when we are out together. I don't have a problem with this. 1
basil67 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Custom. Tradition. That's just the way it is. It tells men they are not available. So, if you have a girlfriend who you haven't yet married, the lack of a wedding ring tells men that she's available to them. Wow, must be scary thinking that all that stands between her and these men is a piece of metal. 3
