Birds of a feather flock together vs opposites attract

These are two common sayings, and neither of them is always right. Personally, I quite strongly lean more towards birds of a feather, but was wondering other people's views.

Opposites attract and then often repel but birds of a feather almost always flock together.

 

I personally think of it more like yin and yang though. Essentially opposites do attract but they have to intertwine together in a way that together they are better otherwise it's just off kilter and won't last.
