Should I get counselling?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

For quite awhile now I've been wondering if I need to see a counsellor. Nothing really bad has ever happened to me, but I have faced things like depression and what not. I'm getting over that though slowly but am still dealing with self-esteem issues(feeling ugly, comparing myself to others, feeling worthless, unloved...). As a 16 year old lots of my friends already call me their "psychiatrist" and I really don't have anyone to talk to. I'm a very good listener I guess you could say and my friends really take advantage of that and tell me their problems all day and night. I don't always mind but the part I really do mind is the fact that none of them will actually listen to ME. The friends I am closest to don't want to hear me and I find myself feeling so alone and with no where and no one to turn to. I've thought that perhaps going to see a counsellor would help, just so that I'd have someone to listen to me and perhaps encouarge me where I need it. At the same time though I'm scared that if I actually do go see one, then something is wrong with me. I don't know what to do... I don't know if my problems are even worth seeing a counsellor, like if they are real or not... What will a counsellor do for me?

When I went to a counsellor it wasn't because I had anything wrong with me, I just needed someone to talk to. I needed someone to help me boost my self esteem and understand why I was going through life like I was. Like you, I was always the greatest listener and could give great advice, but found that I didn't have anyone to bounce my issues off.

You can always go for a session or two and then decide whether it is beneficial or not. I did about four sessions. I thought I had done enough, but a few months later I realised I should have stayed for more. I have been back for a couple more sessions, but I could probably do with going back again. Not because I am depressed or anything, but it's nice to have someone impartial to listen to you and offer advice and enouragement where they can, or where they feel it is necessary.

hey grifftymcgriff

go to a doctor and tell them your problems and tell them you'd like to see a counsellor. they'll then be able to recommend you to some counsellor's in your area.

Nothing to lose by going.

Have you ever heard of anyone getting mentally ill from going to a counselor?

I went a few times when I was 15, 16, and 17. It was wonderful to have someone with an outside view on things that could really listen to you and tell you that what you were feeling or thinking was "normal" (or not). I am very close to my parents and I could talk to them about anything but I still think that their opinions or input would be too bias. Mentally I think it helped to know that the person you were talking to really is there for you with no alterior motives.

Being a teenager is hard and I think that a counselor would be a great idea, actually I think it should be encouraged for all teens! It can be very empowering!

In terms of finding a counselor I think you should maybe talk to your parents if you feel comfortable, their insurance may cover it. Or I would suggest a school counselor.

Good Luck! :)
