Minimum length from temp to direct-to-hire for a reputable company?

I've been with companies where some people could be "temps" for as long as 4 years, but the company I'm currently a temp at is reputable.

 

Am wondering when's a good time to ask if there's a possibility of conversion, and if that's something to ask the boss or the agency.
