Regretting going to college

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am a 22 year old female. I took 3 years off of school after graduating high school and worked and lived on my own and gained some valuable experience in that regard. I didn't know what I wanted to go to school for after high school, so that's why I waited. I finally went back this past September and as the school year is coming to an end, I find myself regretting it. Since I didn't have a specific program I wanted to go in, a counselor recommended that I take a one year program "Liberal Studies." The specific focus of the program was the get familiar with college courses, learn how to think critically and other skills needed in post secondary. I also took courses like Interpersonal Relations, Psychology 1 and 2 and Sociology courses. I find myself regretting my decision and the fact that I took out a student loan. I was hoping that I would decide on another program or field I wanted to study while in this program, but not a lot has sparked my interest and I'd rather just work than continue with schooling. I did learn some valuable skills with this program and learned a lot about various subjects and did well, but I can't help but feel regretful that I went to school for a year with only a certificate to show for it and probably won't get a better job from it.

I think you should consider where your interests and aptitudes are, and what fields have decent career/employment prospects. Medical professions, STEM, and some business degrees offer the best prospects, and your studies so far won't be wasted there.
