Pantothenic Acid For Acne????????? Do you have acne problems? What works????

Some of those do-it-at-home kits are actually not bad quality, its similar to the do-it-yourself home whitening kits. You can definitely get positive results, but probably nothing close to what you would get from a professional.

Rosalind, the pantothenic acid would definitely make an improvement, it takes some time though and the right dose. The girl that mentioned she took B Vitamins was probably taking a Centrum or some other multivitamin, which has pantothenic acid in the quantity of about 20mg per tablet, which isn't even close to the dose you need to make a difference. It is similar to the way people take creatine, so much gets destroyed, that you need a loading phase to saturate your system in the beginning. Your body actively breaks down pantothenic acid into a variety of products that get sent all over the body, that unless you saturate, you won't get the desired effects you are looking for.

As I said, I'd start out with 500 mg X2 a day for a week Rosalind. Check for sensitivity any side-effects. If there are none present, I'd move it up to the 1000 MG x 3 a day dose and stick with that for 4 weeks. If you haven't already, I recommend combining the following products as well.

->Zinc-Optizinc works well, zinc can be toxic and cause mineral imbalances in big doses, all you really need is 60 mg a day, and NO more. 2 x 30mg(standard) doses per day. Solaray makes a terrific zinc supplement.

->Flaxseed Oil-Whether liquid or capsule, I would take two servings of this 2X a day. I recommend Barleans, they are recognized as the best quality producer of EFA's, this is a vital product for your skin, hair, eyes and many other parts of your body.

->Vitamin C-500 Mg x3 times a day

Additionally-

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water

Getting enough vitamin A and E in your diet. If you can afford it I recommend supplementing with Vitamin E, its another vital nutrient for your skin and a powerful antioxidant.

Lots of leafy green vegetables, at least 2 servings a day, it may sound cliched and silly, but studies done at the University of California-Davis proved that eating lots of green vegetables has a most positive correlation with youthful, smooth and blemish-free skin.

One other thing is an herb called Oregon Grape Root. Doctors have actually recommended it to people as it is supposed to promote internal cleansing and wound healing. It has had dramatic effects in clearing up people's skin, it is a bit dubious though. I know people who have had terrific success with it, but when I tried it, I never really noticed the difference. Its one of those things thats really individual. Worth a buy if its on sale or something, one pill a day does the trick as its extremely powerful.

You said you take mega-doses of Vitamin E? Has this actually made a big difference for you? I always have taken Vitamin E in moderation, but I've heard of people having success with taking large doses of A and E, but this tends to vary from person to person. How much do you take????

markraine - thanks so much for your reply.

I will purchase pantothenic acid, and zinc, I'll start taking it in the doses you recommend. I usually give anything new 3 months to kick in - so I'll just be patient for now. But I will report back with the results.

Okay, me taking Vitamin E in mega-dose might not be considered a mega-dose to you, but when you consider a bottle of Centrum contains only 50 IU, I think it is.

Here's what I take daily :

Vitamin E 1000 IU

Vitamin A 20,000 IU

Vitamin C 3000 mg

Folic acid 2 mg

Complex B50 Vitamins

Chromium GTF 500 mcg

and of course a multi-vitamin tossed in for good measure.......

Has any of this made a difference...I truly believe it has.

No I don't take Centrum (which by the way has 6mg/pill based on their website and misleadingly states is 100% of the daily recommendation), and I was just sharing what works and doesn't work for ME based on the title of this thread...

The supplements I take are only available through medical professionals and the doses i take are personalized for me individually based on visits I make to my chiropractor and accupuncturist, verified and modified by the top accupuncturist from China who I was fortunate to be seen by when he was visiting my accupuncturist at his office on a short trip he had made to the US.

Anyways, B vitamins affect the nervous system so I wouldn't want to overdose to the levels you suggest just in case they change my hormones and as a result have a side effect of clearing acne. For the occassional acne I get clearasil does the trick so if I had a severe case i'd probably consider taking more risky measures whose side effects have not been proven and can respect what others choose to take and share with others.

Hi HotCaliGirl :) ....

What's the difference between buying supplements from your accupuncturist &

chiropractor, and purchasing OTC vitamins and minerals from say the drugstore???

I only use the ones that say 'natural source'...so I'm just being curious.

Hi Rosalind,

The stuff I get from my accupuncturist - I just don't see sold at the store...most of the label is in Chinese of the products I get from him, with weird ingredients of different types of roots and barks and he'll put a handwritten sticker that says for ex. "Shu Gan Wan for liver take 8".

My chiropractor sells products that are only available through licensed and/or certified health professionals. Some of the reasons the chiropractor has given me because I used to always ask in case I could find less expensive versions at the drugstore or buy directly from the manufacturer (which I tried and was unable to) include reasons such as having no fillers, the highest unit of activity compared to anything else on the market (and high quality - the enzymes in the enzyme type supplements are the same exact ones found in the body and he prescribes some that will "eat" cholesterol if my cholesterol level is too hgih), the pH stability is effective in the acidic envornment of the stomach whereas anything else over the counter is not, which aslo allows for the enzymes in the supplement to enter the blood stream where immunomodulation and thrombolytic actions can occur.

Some supplements are ok over the counter - I buy Herbalife or Nature Made for Vit C and other vitamins... :)

If I didn't actually experience results, I would not be on this regimine since it is very expensive, but when I go to the "regular" doctor for my physical, she says I am in the shape of a professional athlete ( I DO work out too of course ).

Good for you!...I make a point of maintaining my ideal weight, average NOT skinny. Because in reference to face skin again, I've noticed that women my age who are too skinny also show many wrinkles in their thin faces.

Oh, and one last thing about vitamins - I read that you should NEVER take the 'time release' formulas because they contain CLAY. That's what makes them dissolve slowly, and clay is not healthy to have in your stomache.

That is SO good to know - i've wondered what would makes time release work...it's sad how there is more information on clothing labels - as far as the % of all materials used and where it's from, than on food labels...i don't think meat labels list the antibiotics and chemicals injected in the animal and where they come from...but i know that's getting into a different topic!
