Actually, there are lots of legal and social perks to marriage a notary can't help with. Social Security and taxes being two of them.

 

Also, there are plenty of women who want to have children during their earlier and most fertile years then actually raise those children personally. Those women and their children are still better protected through marriage.

 

And,yes, I'd tell a man who wanted marriage and children with a woman who wasn't willing to marry him to stop playing house and pack his bags.

Our partnership is recognised by Social Security and the tax dept. And we're recognised as 'next of kin'

Then our difference of opinion is social/cultural. In the US, Social Security death benefits are for spouses and children only.

 

The federal government here treats marriage and domestic partnership differently. Domestic partners are 2nd class citizens in this respect.

 

States also treat domestic partners differently than spouses.

 

Legally, nothing here is as good as marriage.
