Quitting smoking and gaining weight

I need to quit smoking. I quit when I was pg w/ both of my children but stupid me started back up again. I quit again 5 years ago only to start back up 2 years ago when my H and I were having major M problems. Well, I need to quit again, and not start back again. All my brothers and sister's smoke, but one. So when I go to visit them it's hard not to light up w/ them. I need to quit but don't know how much time I should give myself b4 I go visit them again and not cave.

I am also worried about gaining weight. I am already 30 lbs OW, I am scared to gain a bunch of weight. I have read that quitting smoking lowers your metabolism, the reason why smokers gain when they quit.

My H told me he would rather have me quit smoking than worry about my weight. I am just scared if I quit, I will gain a bunch of weight and then he wont find me attractive anymore.

Anyone quit smoking and not gain? What did you do to keep from not gaining? How long did you give yourself b4 you were around ppl who smoke?

try keeping baby carrots around or celery sticks....which you can even hold like a cig. and it does help to have something in your hand.

I tried the celery and carrots and even would brush my teeth every time I had a craving -- or walk or do anything. I changed my routine so that I wasn't on the phone in the same room where I was always talking and smoking. I moved my computer - rearranged furniture, had morning coffee in a different place. I quit many times and each time I gained between 40 - 75 pounds. So did my husband and he never smoked! I just recently quit again and I'm wondering just how much weight I'm going to pile on this time. I already weigh over 320 lbs and I have dieted my way to this weight trying to be super-thin when I was younger. I'd settle for weight 150 now! I can lose 40 pounds in six weeks, but I put on 50 pounds the following six weeks!

Be careful when you quit -- if you see the weight start to pile on do something quick before you gain another person! See a doctor about it -- maybe you'll have better luck than I did.

If you gain weight don't smoke too. One vice or the other :) Smokers are more accepted than fat people are tolerated (I don't think fat people are ever really accepted!)

Thanks LB and smoker, I appreciate the advice. What is really going to be hard is going out to my sister or my brothers when they are smoking and not want to light up. My sil wants me to start bowling w/ her in two weeks and practically everyone smokes. I am going to give myself 2 weeks b4 I go to my sister's or my brothers b/c I think that will be enough time.

Smoker, I am sorry that you gained so much weight. My cousin is also 300lbs and wants to quit but she is so scared she will gain even more weight. She has been smoking for about 20 years and wont quit even though her dad is having major health problems do to his smoking ( he quit a year ago). My mom and my cousin's mom are sisters and we have heart disease that runs in our family. My grandpa died in his early 60's and so did my grandma (they both smoked). I would hate to keep smoking and think my life is half over w/ at the age of 35.

I will be careful what I eat and if need be, I will take a walk. I just wish it would cool down though. I just need to keep myself busy and stay off the darn phone. My problem smoking areas are: when I am on the phone (I smoke outside), driving my car (but I don't do it when my kids are w/ me), and when I am visiting my sister and sil. Today I went to town and grabbed a the sunflower seeds just to help me not want to stop at the store and buy a pack.

I am trying two websites to help me. Hopefully they will work. Smoker, if you want them I will post them but I don't know if the mods will take them off. GL w/ everything!!!

With all the Smoking Bans in many states, it really will not be all that hard NOT to smoke. you would physically have to walk outside to smoke in my area.

why not impose that on yourself?

Or Get your car detailed and then do not smoke in it, and keep your car clean.

wellbutrin, (zyban) along withthe patch is supposed to be 95% effective...... That is an awesome success rate!

basically you need to realize that it will be difficult at first. it may not even be the first weeks that are the most difficult. i know when i have quit before, the later weeks, like 4 and on were the hardest, i had such cravings at times, even dreamt of smoking........

Realize that yes, this is a major lifestyle change, and You should change your lifestyle to reflect your non-smoking status......even if it means NOT going out with your smoker buddies if it helps.

Yeah, what to do about that friggin weight gain - when you stop smoking.

I packed on approx 30 pounds, and REALLY became a total b!tch, because I still got cravings, and I would look in the mirror and see a miserable, obese non-smoker..fun huh?

I went back to smoking, and dropped the extra flab.

I just don't know the answer.

P.S. I HATE celery and carrots
