4th Birthday Gift Idea

Recommended Posts

I'm a super geek and in general appreciate anything that a BF would do related to electronics.

But... I agree with d0nnivain. Gifts are supposed to make you feel magical and wonder.

She would certainly be grateful for your effort, but I have a feeling women prefer to feel wonder.

Get her a real gift-like present you guess she would like or have mentioned, and propose to work on her movie collection when you have time - she can buy the hardware. Win-win and she'll be high as a kite.

As thoughtful as the digitizing may be it just doesn't feel like a present. If the OP did his GF's laundry or cleaned her house, would that be a good present? I don't think so. They would be acts of kindness or love but not gifts.

I don't think this is an accurate analogy. A better comparison would be if I bought her a washing machine and then used it to do her laundry or bought her a vacuum and then used it to clean her house.

Years ago, a woman painted me a picture from a photo we took on our second date. It was a combination of something physical and an act of service, which I certainly considered a gift.

While I'm still very much undecided on what to do, this is a good option and I'll consider it. However, I don't think she'd be willing to spend over $2,000 of her money on this, especially since she has less disposable income than I do. Perhaps next time she mentions she wishes her collection was digital like mine, I'll offer to make it a gift for a next occasion and see how she reacts.

If I do decide to go with the media server gift, I was thinking of using something like this for the case.

No matter what you choose to do, it's obvious you're a great thoughtful boyfriend. Suddenly the film gift makes more sense. Good luck and keep us posted!

I'm very geeky so I love the idea! I would also be really touched that my boyfriend went through all the trouble to do something like this for me. I don't think you should worry about what other women would want, or that electronics make a lame gift (as you can see by the responses, there are many women who don't think its a bad idea at all).

I know it's conventional wisdom to avoid giving women electronics. However, she's been very appreciative of my past efforts.

Conventional wisdom is bull****. ;) The majority of the SO's gifts to me have been electronic, and I love them! I mean, you've been with your gf for 4 years - you know her far better than any crappy Cosmo article does. If you think she'll like it, go for it.

While I understand & appreciate the time value of money, your service is not very gift like. After 4 years together, you'd be better off getting her earrings or a bracelet. Just digitize her movie collection because your her BF & she wants you to. Don't try to pass it off as a present.

You know I love you, d0nnivain, but I strongly disagree with this. :) I would have been quite disappointed if the SO just gave me earrings or a bracelet for my birthday. It would demonstrate to me that he wasn't paying any attention to what I liked or wanted (I'm generally not a huge fan of jewelry). The gifts he has given me were all tailored to my interests and desires, which showed me that he knew ME, and wasn't just following some cliched advice.

(OTOH, if it was a more generic holiday like Christmas/Valentines Day and not my birthday, I'm okay with more generic gifts like flowers/chocolates/jewelry.)

If the OP's gf is really into movies, I think this would be a fine gift.

I'm with you Elswyth. Probably the most thoughtful Valentines gifts I ever got was a PS2 with a selection of games. Back then I was very into console gaming and it was PERFECT.

Any lacking in imagination bozo can do generic flowers, chocolate or jewellery. It takes real insight to pay attention to what really matters to someone. Nowadays I'd much more prefer two copies of the same book so we can read it together. Or the latest edition of trivial pursuit with a commitment to playing it together (and maybe a challenge!).

If she is really really into cinema and it's a passion, I can't see how this can be wrong. One thing I would add is perhaps a special selection of movies just for you two - call it something special that will resonate. I dunno... Our Gold Class Collection.

Oooo, I'm thinking give her one of those cinema boxes of popcorn as a gift. With a movie ticket sticking out of it saying IOU a gold class selection for our gold class love. Then unveil the plex network you've set up. Show her your specially selected gold class list of movies and commit to one night a month watching one together until you've worked through the list.

Sorry, getting carried away about what I'd really like gift wise! It's important to note that my primary love language is quality time (equally with physical touch) so I love gifts that advance that theme.

I don't know your SO. So like many of us here I'm projecting my preferences. Given you're the only one here who actually knows her... you probably have to go with your own judgement.

Really keen to see what you decide and how it goes!

I agree, I think the OP's gift is perfect for a girl who loves movies (as I assume he knows his gf is). It shows a lot of thought, effort, and creativity.

My SO's gifts to me are very tailored to my interests/preferences, and I love him for that. I actually don't mind flowers/chocolates/jewelry for Valentines' Day - my VDay gifts to him are equally cliche, haha (lingerie/bondage stuff), and I don't think cliche is a bad thing at all for a standard holiday. But for my birthday I really like that he gets me stuff that's very ME.

Pay attention to what she says and what she's wanting but can't afford between now and then. You know, it's funny. In the past, I have told a member of my family any number of things I want and need near either birthday or Christmas only to have them tell me a week before "I have no idea what to get you." People don't listen. If you'll listen, you'll know what she wants and needs. See if she has a wish list on Amazon or on Pinterest. If nothing comes out of her, then ASK her what she wants. We all wants stuff and would rather get what we want than something random.
