bicyclejunk
exercise. I keep reading book after book after book and they all say the same thing: DIETS DON'T WORK That doesn't mean eat whatever you want. But cut out the bad foods (or at least limit them) and eat more Fuel Type foods. Don't go on a "i'm only going to eat salads for a week" kinda thing, cuz the only thing you're going to lose is Water Weight. Miracle Diets don't work either, why do you think Atkins is going Bankrupt? Exercise, Exercise, Exercise and if you don't have time for exercise, make time. Just sharing....Anyone agree? disagree? Merin
I agree... All things in moderation and excersize
Art_Critic
Calories in = Calories out ... means no weigh gain or loss Watch your Caloric intake .. Drink diet drinks or water only You don't alway's have to excersise to lose weight .. Only if your Intake is higher than you are burning

Zephyr45
I agree to an extent. Sometimes "diets" can and do work. Unfortunately there is too much marketing crap revolving around them and usually people look to a diet as a temporary thing which boomarangs when they stop. Atkins or South Beach may be fads but they can both be effective. Cutting back on high glycemic carbs in your diet is pretty sound science for losing weight. As well as eating 6 smaller meals a day versus 3. Disregarding some aspects of the aforementioned diets, they both stress this and are ultimately lower calorie diets and as such they can work if you go into them well informed and with realistic expectations. Side note: These new "Only x net carbs" diet bars/meals that advertise, say, 5g net carbs, but really have 5g of carbs, 5g of fiber, and 15g of sugar alcohols are really starting to piss me off. Even if sugar alcohol carbs do not cause the same insulin spike that a real carb does, it's still a freakin carb when your body processes it. People are eating these things counting 5g of carbs when they are really eating 25g (albiet, it's a little better than just 25g of sugary carbs). They are fine so long as you are aware of what you are really eating, but I just hate the false advertising and "low carb approved" nonsense. Ultimately though, I agree. Calories In - Calories Out = Weight.

MWC_LifeBeginsAt40
Dieting works if it includes an exercise regime and a lifetime change in eating habits. "FAD" diets do not work. If your calories in = calories out you will maintain your weight but you will not lose weight. There is also no such thing as losing weight in a certain body area by diet OR exercise. I know the first place I always lose weight is the last place I gain it.....the boobies and vice versa for my bum!
Outcast
Drink diet drinks or water only Actually, a recent study showed that all soft drinks were correlated with weight gain and that people who drank diet drinks gained even more weight than people who didn't. It could be because people eat more when they drink 'diet' drinks. OTOH, other studies showed that people who drink a lot of milk don't lay much fat in their bellies and seem to not put as much weight on.
RecordProducer
I can't agree. I manage to lose weight when I am on a diet. But I also walk. Jogging is okay, but swimming is the best. It wastes a lot of calories and engages all muscles and makes them thin, but nicely shaped. Dancing is also good. Go to bed hungry. Eat the healthy food first then grab the unhealthy. Chances are when your body gets all the necessary vitamins and proteins, it won't crave for carbs and fats so much so you will consume them in decent quantities.

NewLee40
Well, I do kind of consider myself an expert on this subject because after a 20 year battle of the bulge, I finally succeeded in losing 120 pounds and keeping it off. I now have a side business where I'm successfully coaching other people in reaching their goals. The entire diet industry is based on simplistic claims about what it takes to lose weight. Calories in vs. calories out. Exercise. Don't eat this food or eat this miracle food. The issue is far more complex than that and there is no one size fits all formula. What works for one individual doesn't necessarily work for another. There is an acronym in the weight loss forum world for this, YMMV, your mileage may vary. My personal solution was a combination of finding the right diet for me (which happened to be a low carb diet because of health problems that were directly related to insulin resistance), exercise (not too vigorous, just walking), and developing the right mindset (especially changing my self talk) necessary to reach my goals. Above all, I focused on permanent life style changes, instead of going on or off any particular program. Its this way of eating for life, lifetime exercise, and working on all the other underlying psychological garbage that contributed to my problem. There is no ONLY way...there is just the way that works for you. OH! And I believe the reason Atkins went bankrupt was because they did the very same thing that the low-fat proponents did all the years before. They saw a marketing opporutunity and totally adulterated the program by flooding the market with diet junk food. We are a junk food dependent nation. Whether its low carb junk food, low fat junk food, or just plain old fashioned junk food, it will make you fat if you eat too much of it. People just changed their poison and when it didn't work, they stopped buying it. Whole, real, foods. That's what Atkins was all about. Atkins the corporation lost sight of that. Blackfrost
Good 20 minute+ vigorous sex right before bed is also great for getting your heartrate up, and you will burn additional calories while you sleep Ah... back to treating my wife like a cardio machine again hahaha wonder if she'd mind if I wore my Ipod while I was working out on her. JS17
I'm bringing this thread back because I'm looking for some miracle answer:laugh: I generally believe in just healthy eating and exercise but I've gained a few (*cough*11*cough*) pounds in the past few months and I feel uncomfortable in my own skin.I believe that I gained the weight due to a new medicine that I'm going to talk to my dr about getting off of. I'm a vegan for other reasons but my diet is pretty strict/healthy and yes it can get too heavy on the carbs if I'm not careful. I've been trying to eat less recently and excercise more but I'm not having any success. Do any of the experts here have any tips or advice for me?
Outcast
I'm no expert but I know that weight loss happens slowly. Keep exercising; maybe increase intensity or duration, and you will have to count calories a little more closely. Even vegans can pig out And then the pounds will drop off slowly. smile95
It is different for everyone...I used to work out 6 times/week and eat healthy. I was NOT losing weight. I was standing still. NOt until I cut back on exercise and ate more did I see a drop. It is possible to exerise too much. It can hurt you if you do not eat enough of the right things. If I eat low carb and do not work out, I drop weight ASAP!

If I eat low carb and do not work out, I drop weight ASAP! I've had the same problem with working out too much. weird right? I don't want to cut my diet any more because I'm afraid if I eat too few calories I'll drop my metabolism. I'm going to try to keep a journal of my calories, one of my guy friends recommended fitday.com. I'm not sure what else to do really. I walk to and from work so about an hour a day 5 days a week plus I go to the gym a minimum of 2x a week so I can up that. Maybe I just need to learn to deal with getting a little chunky
Blackfrost
fitday.com was way too much information logging for me. If I was to sit down every morning and tabulate my calories for the entire day, I'd be fired from my job for not actually getting any real work done until late afternoon. haha Fitday is just a little overly anal IMO
JS17
Thanks, I still probably check fitday out but now I don't have to feel bad if I don't follow through... you just gave me an excuse
smile95
JS17 Ya know I have found that the more you stress over it and count calories the less you seem to lose. Just relax, continue to exercise and I know it sounds weird, but really try eating more. Have you ever tried low carb? Not no carb....I stayed between 50-100 carbs /day and saw such a difference. But it is not something you do and then stop or it will come back. You have to committ to it for life. After you lose some weight, you can then slowly up your carbs....but I cannot even begin to tell you the diffrence I saw.
NewLee40
yea...I like Fitday for a reality check now and then. Its easy to let things sneak up on you. But, I can't maintain that kind of diligence every day. Its too easy to be come obsessed over it. Mind if I share my before and after pics? I've lost some more since the after, mainly because I had a full lower body lift with a tummy tuck.
