congratulations on your move to pursue higher education.

you ask if you can go on to a four-year school after completing your basics at a junior college -- yes, as long as you do the proper paperwork to transfer your credits to that bigger institution. Completing your GED is what allows you to go into college, be it community or university level.

my dad dropped out of high school back in the late 1940s, joined the Army and got his GED through the military. After he retired from the military in 1970, he began taking extension classes by mail while going to a community college 60 miles from my hometown. He transferred a couple of different times and ended up getting a bachelor of fine arts from a prestigious Catholic university in South Texas at age 63. I like to think of him as a success story for someone who dropped out of school, though why he got an art degree beats the hell out of me!!!

if you have a good idea what you want to study, plan early with your advisor about the classes you need to take to get the most bang for your buck there at the community college -- as in, be sure what you take will transfer to the university you plan to attend. I seem to recall a couple of people taking advanced level biology classes when I was at junior college, only to have to retake them at the university they ended up transferring to, simply because those credit hours wouldn't transfer.

also remember, you've got a wealth of financial aid at your finger tips. In my state, there's a site for college-bound and college students called "College for Texans" that's a really good resource because it describes the different kinds of aid and how to go about applying for. The site also has a lot of good ideas of what to expect when you get ready for and go to college -- maybe you can find something similar for the state you're in?

best of luck to you in your college career!

Hey, for more contemporary info - I was supposed to graduate HS in 2003. I was short 1 elective credit. Instead of going to school one extra year, I got my GED in 2003 and started to attend college right away. My GED scores ended up being better than getting a 3.5 in high school and I had my pick of colleges to go to.

My point is - a GED is not the end of the world. Just take what you have and go as far with it as you can.
