callinglondon
Met my girlfriend's dad for the first time on Wednesday and I was crappin bricks! Very nice guy but I was beyond nervous and did NOt talk much. I wasn't trying to be rude or disrespectful I was just a tad bit nervous. This is 100% normal right? I apologized to my girlfriend about it and said I was just a bit awkward and shy. I think maybe I need to be a bit more comfortable around him, then I can really start gabbing around with him. Is everyone else the same meeting the parents?
CautiouslyOptimistic
Yes, perfectly normal .
Gaeta
It's very normal ! and I think it's even more stressing for men to meet the new dad-in-law. I am from a family of men, I am the only daughter and I have dad + 3 brothers. For a new boyfriend it's like meeting my 4 bodyguards!
Rockdad
I wanted to have a daughter so very much but this is yet another reason God only gave me sons. I would have impressed upon a young man that comes calling real fear.
Author callinglondon
Honestly I just hope he understands I was nervous lol

lakerman34
COMPLETELY OK. I started dating this lady in October. I Skyped with her parents in December, officially met them in February, and I'm STILL nervous. He's an intelligent man who owns his own family practice (he's a doctor). Kind of intimidating. We were riding in his Audi, and I leaned up against the car. He came towards me. My girlfriend said, "word of advice: don't EVER lean up against his cars. PLEASE heed my advice." He didn't talk to me for the next 2 days. I'm fairly certain he likes me though. Nerves are OK. Just be genuine, nice, and don't talk about yourself too much!
d0nnivain
I'm sure he was nervous when he 1st met your GF's mom. As long as you were polite & are good to his daughter things ought to be fine. If you don't have a firm handshake, practice that but otherwise don't sweat it. You will grow more relaxed over time. Do not get so relaxed that it could be mistaken for disrespectful.
Author callinglondon
I made a few funny jokes he laughed at, held a door open for him, and told him it was nice to meet him so hopefully it went ok!
kgcolonel
yep, the first time i met my (now deceased) FIL, he was cleaning his guns and did not get up to shake my hand, only acknowledged my presences with a "Hi" and instructions to his daughter, "don't be late"......lol
mortensorchid
I would be nervous meeting my SO's parents, of course. I am more nervous about my SO meeting my parents though, they are very intimidating and make people uncomfortable. But that's another story. I'm sure she'll understand if you were a bit … Off that day.

anduina
This is normal for sure. Met my boyfriend's parents a little while ago. Think I said less than 20 words from being so nervous. Thankfully, they like to talk so there weren't any awkward silences.
lakerman34
I would be nervous meeting my SO's parents, of course. I am more nervous about my SO meeting my parents though, they are very intimidating and make people uncomfortable. But that's another story. I'm sure she'll understand if you were a bit … Off that day. My experience is similar. The girlfriend's parents are very pleasant people (dad is a LITTLE hard to read, but seems to like me, mom is SUPER sweet and definitely likes me). My dad is somewhat conservative, doesn't fully believe in higher education (he's a wealthy man who didn't even finish high school, my girlfriend is going for her PhD), and my mom is a pretty judgmental woman (when I told her that my girlfriend has blue hair, she automatically assumed immaturity without even meeting her). I told my girlfriend to just be herself, and she really has nothing to worry about, I'm sure they'll like her (really, I am sure), HOWEVER, if they fly off the rails, I told her that I'm the one dating her, not my family, and I don't really care what they think. I know her, I love her, and I know she's right for me. No one is changing my mind.
act00
OMG, yes, it's perfectly normal to be really, really nervous meeting the family, especially when you're young and you're doing this for the first time. It gets easier, but I can't say it's necessarily less nerve-wracking.
heavenonearth
Yes. I met my boyfriends parents plenty of times in the past half year. Even went on a vacation with his whole family recently. And i still poop bricks every damn time. I am so anxious i get constipated. It’s true.
