What happened to the cop? Did your exW’s family sue him?

Yup, barkeep or bouncer or cocktailer. Their turf, they handle and likely have many times. They know how to handle mean/violent people/drunks. Battery on a person would likely find more than one person intervening. Be aware, if doing so, to smile since you'll likely be on CCTV.

Can't recall if LEO's are exempt but local IA prohibits carrying concealed and drinking alcohol. Violation leaves one subject to revocation of their LCH and/or citation/arrest depending on what went down. That may vary around the country. Personally, I'd never go in a bar armed even if I could. Too many things can go wrong.

As an example, my exW's dad, who owned a bar in Chicago, was shot and paralyzed in his own bar by a cop who thought he was banging his wife. He was in a wheelchair the rest of his life.

Thin blue line, Chicago, 1960's. Other than the blurb when it happened the story disappeared as did the cop back into the machine. ExW never mentioned any civil action. They lived in a flat above the bar; working class neighborhood. May sound odd but back then a lot of disputes were solved with violence and it was accepted. I ran into it as a child myself with the armed young adults who terrorized us. Different times.

The western version was beating the guy silly, strapping him to his horse and sending the horse back to the ranch. Now, that sounds like 1800's stuff but, nah, still went on in the 60's and 70's in some of the farm towns around here. Heck, where I moved to in the 80's there still wasn't a stop light anywhere and there was a hitching rail at the local bar. The guy who's my best friend for a few decades tended bar there during the 60's and some of the early stories came from him. Back then the patrons would handle an unruly drinker, beat him senseless, throw him out the back door and call the constable to take him to the tank to sleep it off. The constable was also the judge ;)
