Do Men Go on Vacation Alone?

Recommended Posts

Good to know! thank you.

This guy I'm speaking of is late 40s, no grandkids (no kids), pets, etc; and he going to cruise Scandanavia, Russia, a few other places. Not sure if he's going alone or not. It's a mystery, and I can't control whether he is or not, so I guess I should just let go of my negative thinking and hope for the best.

Can I ask why you're concerned about this? I can't understand how you fit in to the equation.

I went by myself in Montreal back in 2004 for months, also stayed in NY for a week.

Its a great experience, I was only 20 then and I met a lot young men and women in youth hotel.

Mind you, I had no intention to ''serial date'' I had only in mind to spend money in bars, museums, other good stuffs.

I actually didn't even get laid.. :lmao: but made great short lived friendships with people of either gender that are to this day gone of course.

But now? At 34? Nah, I wouldn't travel alone. Prolly with a couple friends or a girlfriend.

I wouldn't recommend a cruise. It will be mostly couples and you won't have much time in each place.

Where abouts do you live, what's your budget, and what time of year are you looking at?

For low budget I'd say Amalfi Coast, Mexico, Cuba.

For mid budget, Lesser Antilles, Alps.

For higher budget, Galapagos, Machu Picchu, Everest Base Camp.

The great thing about going alone is that you can go wherever you want!!

Thank you!

Because heÂ’s my friend and I like him. I wrote another thread about him, we hadnÂ’t talked in a few months, and we still havenÂ’t technically talked on the phone in a few months (only texted briefly). I was afraid to contact him then I found out from a mutual acquaintance of ours that heÂ’s taking this cruise. (He takes vacations frequently alone.)

Anyway I was afraid to contact him and now my mind is wandering since I found out heÂ’s taking this vacation. So if he is going with someone, then I guess I will be out of the equation. :-(

RV towing a fishing boat.

that's even possible? Dang!

Sure, I've got friends with CDL's who tow fifth wheels with their pickup with a fishing boat hitched to the back of the fifth wheel. Sample image.

Some guys have a truck camper (that's what I used to have) and tow the boat behind. I used to tow a race car trailer behind mine. Back when I was young and single I'd head out for a week or two of racing up and down the west coast on my own, living at the track or along the road in the camper.

Such vacations were fun but I will admit without a particular interest or destination, I also had a lot of fun with the same rig (just the camper) with my exW. We'd sometimes head out and see what we ran across. Easy to put fuel in the truck and groceries in the camper and keep going. I did a lot of my vacationing long before Google maps and Garmin. Anyone remember AAA TripTiks? Service station maps? :D Stop for fuel, get a map and figure it out from there. Need ideas for places to see? Stop at the diner or truck stop restaurant and ask people.

Old guys remember that stuff. A guy in his 40's, maybe, as a child. Vacations were often the unknown. Adventures. Times have changed.

Yes... I remember!! The ones I received were like little flip books (GBC bound), each page folded out with additional information on it. It was a "big deal" to flip to the next page as you completed miles on your journey.

I, also remember being in North Carolina (many years ago) and I needed a place to stay for the night, so I stopped at this "Mom & Pop" gas station to ask about motels in the area. They gave me directions to this "off the beating path" SMALL motel. It was also a "Mom & Pop" operation that was very clean, quiet, safe and very inexpensive. Great memories... Great Trip!!

I was able to revisit the old days, which still exist in some parts of the country, when looking for a new residence up in Oregon. After being denied a hotel room at a 'pet friendly' hotel due to my 'pet' being a cat, I was casting around for someplace to stay and ran across a little 9 room motel run by an elderly lady who turned out to be both a cat and dog lover. Clean, inexpensive and perfect location for searching. After spending some time with her (I'm great listening to people's life stories) she also gave me a tip on a local lady who did real estate stuff and that lady ended up being the agent who found my new place and got me set up. It all started with a solo vacation in the forests of Oregon with a cat. ;)

Ah, thanks for the explanation. I checked your old thread https://www.loveshack.org/forums/platonic/friendship/656543-scared-call-my-guy-best-friend-2.html

I'm sorry to say that regardless of if he is travelling solo or with someone, it looks like you're already out of the equation. When people leave an office - and especially if they move away - work mates mostly do get left behind. It's rotten to be without someone we've grown close to, but that's how it goes.

Time to leave this guy in the past and move on.

Wow- I've never thought to bring a cat to a hotel! And it's hard to hide them because they like to meow alot - especially when travelling/in a car!

I know, we were a lot more than co-workers, so it's unfortunate. It's funny because a lot of people I wasn't too close too have gotten in touch with me lately and it seems like he's the only one who hasn't. :-(

I feel like motels like that are always the best. I enjoy winging it when on a road trip - maybe planning a hotel for the first day, then winging it the rest of the time - so much fun! I've done that more than once, it's the best.

Yes, normally the case but mine was a retired Himalayan show cat/breeder who was used to traveling to shows and was rarely vocal on the road. He traveled in one of those large-dog softsided transport enclosures that could easily house him, his food/water and litter box. He'd vocalize for the first twenty minutes or so, a bit, then curl up and go 8-10 hours, which was typical travel time, no problem. He probably traveled a total of 15-20 thousand miles with me before he passed away.

Older guys tend to be set in their ways and if they get into the solo vacation groove, sure having a companion once in awhile is nice but we also like our cave time. It's different with each guy. Of my friends, the ones who've been married forever are far less likely to do solo vacations than those of us who aren't married or were only married part of our lives. Habits become ingrained.

Thanks Carhill, that makes sense about older guys and makes me feel better!

And wow regarding the cat! I only have brought my constant-meowing cat to and from the vet so I assumed taking her on a trip would be a nightmare lol!

I've gone on several vacations alone. It has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is, you can do whatever the hell you want; the disadvantage is, you have nobody to share your experience with. I tend to be a loner and prefer vacationing alone, but some of the best vacays I've ever had were with another friend there. I have an old friend out in L.A. who I consider to this day to be like a long lost brother from another mother because we traveled together twice. I love this guy, not in a gay way, but as a human being and friend because of our experiences together. We were lost in Xi'An together. We got caught in a Southeast Asian monsoon and drenched like hell together. We went out into nature and confronted wild and dangerous animals together. We climbed the Great Wall of China together. We talked about the afterlife over some beers at night and coffee in the morning together. We drank beers and talked **** about our co-workers together of course (lol). Had I gone alone on these trips, I'd only have half the connection to this guy, which would have made me the loser.

YES.

I have gone on many many vacations alone. But I don't know other men who have gone alone. However, alone may mean several things. He may know someone where he is going or meeting someone there, then it is not really alone. Could be business alone. A group outing--alone.

Most people do not enjoy the planning for the trip and the aloneess when you get there. I always feel conspicuous and conscious of being alone in a new place. Occasionally women travel alone also.

huh? how did you come to those conclusions? "most people" "occasionally..."

Speaking for yourself is one thing, but making broad sweeping generalities is counter productive.

I know plenty of people who travel alone, and that includes women, myself included. I just came back from a much needed get away and met lots of single travelers, male and female.

OP, you really won't get your answer here whether your friend is traveling alone or not. Perhaps, you could ask him.

I had a guy tell me once that he went on an Alaskan cruise in order to meet women. But he said he was sorely disappointed because there were a bunch of old people on the cruise. Lol.
This is what Caribbean cruises are for, especially singles cruises. Lots of single young ladies on those during spring break and summer.
