What is a fling exactly, anyway?

Recommended Posts

What does it typically include? Somewhere between flirting and an affair? Should it be understood that it's brief and meaningless but includes sexual intercourse? There might not be consensus on a definition, but I'm just wondering what most people consider it to be. Thanks.

I believe that a fling is somewhere between a ONS and an affair. It would include a couple of sexual encounters over a short period of time, say a week or two. Longer than that and it transitions into an affair.

A "fling" is a term a cheater uses in an attempt to justify and/or minimize their infidelity...

I'd say it's a short term (a week - vacation fling - to a season - summer fling) romance involving sex. If you're married, it's also cheating (unless you have permission).

Yup! It’s all semantics.

Simple Logic

Many times it is a short relationship when both people know it is going to end due to future events such as changes in geography or life goals.

All of the definitions presented so far are excellent.

I think of a fling as a momentary lapse in judgment. The person who has the fling is not usually committed to exploring the fling. It's short term, and I think it does involve intercourse.

Typically I think of a fling as something that the person talking about it isn't really into anymore. "Yeah, she and I had a fling." A fling is the opposite of "a torrid affair"--I love those words ... which mean intense, deep, passionate, full surrender to the affair.

It's amazing how certain words--like "fling"--are inherently vague. Trying to a word like "fling" reminds me of the struggle multiple-language speakers have in translating a word or concept in one language to another language.

I fully agree. Typically my own definition of these definitions fall into this level of classification:

Flirting: anything up to but not including sexual touching or passionate kissing.

Cheated: passionate kissing or a one night stand either involving oral or intercourse, or someone using a hand or fingers on the other person.

Fling: oral or intercourse over a minimum of two occasions, typically with the understanding it won't last long.

Cheating: oral/intercourse many times with either someone or multiple partners other than their own partner.

Unless you're in an open relationship, so then you're just discretely normally dating another person on the side.

When I think of a fling. Its a situation where a man and woman have physical relations with each other, but there is no committed relationship component to it. Most likely will be one is a little bit more into the other. The other wants to have that physical craving and just goes for it.

My definition of a fling is what I had with the courier at work, met up a few times for sex, oral, beer and chatter. Neither of us were interested in anything more than that.
