Engagement Ring

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am recently engaged and I wanted to ask any you ladies if you have any good advice for maintaineance/care for engagement rings. I have a 3 stone engagement ring (emerald setting) on 18k white gold. I absolutely love it but I do not want to damage it. The jewler recommended that I did not lift weights while wearing my ring and while sleeping. Do any of you ladies out there have any advice on how to take good care of your ring. I was thinking about buying a necklace and wearing the ring around my neck. I do not want damage my new ring, but I do want to show it off.

Thanks!

there are some people who never take their rings off for any reason. my sister, for example--never removes them. she cleans them regularly, and they have not been scratched or damaged....yet. (after 4 years.)

me? i wouldn't wear mine to lift weights, wash dishes, paint the walls, anything i thought could risk damaging my ring.

i guess it's up the owner, but if you're concerned, i would certainly take good care of them. and if you're wanting to show them off, sure ,show it off! for the most part, you show things off in public, and one doesn't usually wash dishes or paint the walls in public anyway!

good luck, and congratulations...your ring sounds beautiful.

You could get a necklace to wear your ring on when you are in a situation where you might damage it if you prefer. I wouldn't wear it to lift weights or change a tire. Normal situations such as time at work and home will probably leave some wear and tear (i.e. scratches) but nothing that can't be buffed out by a jeweler.

So, if you are worried, I would take it off when you feel like you might damage it. Having a necklace on would give you a place to put it immediatly. (Do not put your beautiful ring in your pocket if you can help it.) Maybe take it off before bed, and drop it in some cleaner in the morning.

But do wear it and enjoy it! :D

I wear mine each day (a ruby surrounded by diamonds...antique)...i take it off at the gym or when i wash dishes etc...and to sleep.

I haven't been married long and my wedding band already had a big scratch (from an outdoorsy honeymoon)...but i took my rings to the jeweller to be cleaned and he buffed it out...so all good as new again.

I'd wear it most of the time, but take it off when you are doing something risky/super active (like the gym, surfing, washing up etc),,, i mean you want to wear it and feel happy looking at it on your finger...and you want others to see it too and know you are engaged and happy! and plus enjoy its beauty

Don't worry too much about your engagement ring it should be built to stand the test of time. Make sure you have a lifetime guarantee from the jeweler you bought it from and they should clean it for you one every 6 to 12 months as part of the service.

If it's white gold you may need to have it re-coated in about 2 or 3 years. New white gold rings are coated with rhodium. To keep a white gold ring looking its best, Loveti recommends an annual replating of rhodium, since the coating wears off over time.

Most people don't think to ask when they buy their engagement ring but you will want it cleaning and coating in about a year and it helps if it's free.

But bottom line is most engagement rings are very durable and very few ever get damaged.

Hope that helped;)

when i was engaged, i just made sure i took it off when i was sleeping and put it in the cleaner. i found when i slept it got caught in everything and i lost one of the smaller stones on the band. sometimes i would forget about it being in the cleaner in the morning and in a rush take off w/o putting it on, then i couldn't relax until i did put it on so i understand. if your ring is properly fitted you shouldn't have to worry about it too much, i still lifted weights, went swimming, washed dishes etc. with it on, but putting it in the cleaner every night really helped and made it always look super nice and shiny. a good ring will last and if your man was smart about it he set up a good deal with the store so that you can come in for free cleanings and have it checked and i had coverage so if a stone or something came off it was replaced no charge. ask your guy about it.

by the way how does he feel about you wearing it around your neck a la' carrie bradshaw, some guys find that rude. i wanted to do that but my ex fiance thought it looked like i wasn't taking it serioulsy.

also question for you ladies, if you are no longer engaged but you still have the ring, do you think it's ok to wear it on your right hand? i love my ring, but sometimes i am afraid people will think i am holding on and i certainly won't wear it around the new boyfriend. so what do you do with it after awhile, especially if you love it, but you have really gotton serious with the new guy?
