Yesterday I had taken her to an appointment and she had gained 3 oz. The pediatrician isn't pleased but wants us to come back next Friday for another weigh in. I did make an appointment with a different pediatrician for a second opinion for not this Monday, but next.

Yes, once they start to each solids you can add whipping cream, butter, high fat yogurt, avocado, and other fats to the diet to boost calories. The feeding specialist tells families - everything that you try to stay away from when you shop because it’s “high fat” - those are the things you want...

 

Best to ask your physician OP. They will guide you...

I hope tomorrow appointment with this different pediatrician can provide some insight. Our daughter had only gained an ounce at her weigh in this past Friday. She wasn't hospitalized yet because it was Father's Day weekend and she wasn't in any immediate distress, but she wants to have her admitted for testing. She is a premie, and I'm doing everything they are telling me to do, but I just don't know.

So the second pediatrician today wants to do some of his own testing. We had transferred her medical records ahead of time. So we're going to go ahead and have that done Wednesday.

The thing that baffles me is that otherwise, she is developmenting fine. She is rolling from stomach to back flawlessly and even has rolled the other way a few times. She has great head support and can get on her hands and knees with ease. SHe even eats well, but for some reason, she is just not gaining weight. She is not lethargic, has plenty of wet and dirty diapers.

Maybe she’s just going to be tiny.

 

I know they’re doctors but perhaps they put too much emphasis on the charts. She’s gaining.

 

You’ll need to ask on Wednesday why they’re focusing so strongly on that rather than her developmental milestones. Hopefully you’ll have a better understanding of why then.

 

I had one pediatrician tell me that my picky eater was going to be okay because he drank milk. That never made much sense to me.

 

I should’ve asked for his reasoning behind that but instead I was satisfied that my kid drank milk and left it alone.

I think because she was a premature baby, they just want to rule out any causes.

Both my father and my father in law were skinny as rails. They could eat whatever they wanted and never gain weight. Surely we've all known people like this.

 

I think the testing is great and to uncover something that might be helpful for her .. And I also agree with the poster than mentioned her weight gain might be down, because she is becoming more active.

She is being admitted in the hospital for some additional testing on Tuesday the 2nd overnight to Wednesday the 3rd.

It's been a stressful road. She will be 7 months old on the 18th, and on Friday her stats were 23 3/4 inches and 11 pounds 13 oz. She is 4 months adjusted age. She is at the 1% percentile for height and weight for her actual age. Based on her adjusted age she falls about 50% percentile for height and 25% percentile for weight. So the pediatrician we got a second opinion for his less concerned. She had a bunch of testing done and there isnt' any underlying problems they have found. They want to continue to monitor her and prescribed a higher calorie formula to help.

That’s sounds pretty typical for a premie. I’m glad you are less concerned.

The pediatrician also thinks once she starts solids in two months when she is six months adjusted age, that the weight will be more steady. But in the mean time she is now on Alimentum 24 calorie. It's expensive and insurance covers most of it.

I would agree. Absolutely.

 

Just remember, it’s likely that she will always be on the low end of the growth chart. I have a friend who’s son has always been in the <2% for weight since the day he was born. He was not a premie is is otherwise “typical” with his development. It’s just how he is made.

 

The important thing is not the number, but that they continue to plot along and grow according to the charts. 2% at 6 months, 2% at 2 years is ok. 20% at 6 months and 2% at 2 years is a little more troubling...

Another weigh-in and she has gained five ounces. So far the increase in calories in the formula has helped. I hope it keeps up for next weigh-in.

She had her eight month check up on the 16th. She is doing so well. She is 13 pounds 11 oz. She can sit unsupported for up to five seconds, and it won't be long until she is crawling.

I really want to start her on solids but waiting until next month per pediatrician advice. In the meantime, we sit her in a high chair and give her a spoon to play with. Maybe practice her coordination.

I noticed two teeth are coming in. She has been cranky and drooling like crazy. Just thought I'd share.
