lolita888
So I am just wondering. Is it better to divorce before or after you retire? Is it harder?
stillafool
Before. You may not live until retirement.

d0nnivain
Before retirement lawyers, accountants & judges will estimate the future value of your retirement accounts. If they over estimate, you may have saddled with paying too much. After retirement the calculations about the value of retirement accounts are more accurate because you aren't projecting as far into the future. Only you can calculate the emotional costs of waiting.
Author lolita888
in either scenario you'll be lonely No it's not me but my brother and his wife. And just because you don't divorce doesn't mean you're not lonely. Just wondering because they have lots of properties together. They both have good job. They have been working for decades and had a lot of properties together (houses and cars etc). But I am not sure how the assets will be divide and what about the retirement fees and insurance? will his wife receive anything if he divorce her before he retired?
d0nnivain
will his wife receive anything if he divorce her before he retired? Yes. Only a lawyer looking at the actual balance sheets can project how much.
Simple Logic
It makes no difference. If either has a defined pension, 1/2 belongs to the other, retirement accounts are split 50/50, the rest the marital assets are divided, social security is not divided. If one is on a disability, it usually is not divided.
