Basic skills for city. help

Background: I grew up in the sticks, off the grid. Wouldn't call it a town, just a little community. Limited Solar, wind, Hydro for power.

 

I consider my home school education to be equal or better than public education.

 

I recently took a job in a small city. It's been a real culture shock. Most of the things you take for granted, can be a challange for me at 1st.

 

With help from here, I was able to get some embarassing questions answered (thank you)

 

I have another one. I'm getting a car. I'm not new to driving. drove cars, trucks, tractor from the age of 12.

 

Back home we made monthly trips to the nearest little town to get supplies including gas. Either myself or the station owner (only had 2 pumps)would fill jug after jug, and I load them on the truck.

 

Here I see a mad house of cars descending on gas stations, rapid pace.

 

My question: If I "pay 1st", when I go into the store what sequence do I give the info? Pump 4, $20 worth, regular. or $20, regular, pump 4, or whatever. ????

It's these simple things that I'm afraid to look foolish doing.

usually you just say "20 on pump 4" and then when you go back to the pump, you pick the gas grade that you want by pushing a botton or lifting the nozzle (on old pumps.)

 

but it might not be like that everywhere, so check when you get there.

Just say "20 on 4" if there's no slot to pay at the pump and you actually have to go to the cashier, then pick whichever grade by pressing a button before you fill... or go to a full service station...just costs a few cents more/gallon and let the attendent take care of it for you.

20 on 4. Pick the best grade. Why feed something you will depend on with crap. Give your car the higher grade gas and it will take care of you. The philosophy of life is everywhere.

My doctor told me that putting higher grade in a car that doesn't require it by the manufacturer, will harm the car. I can't remember the technicalities he described, but it made a lot of sense.

Basic, I grew up in a fairly large city and through work and play, I've met quite a few people who grew up in small towns. One thing I've noticed that they don't understand is that there are some bad people out there. Not everyone is a good person or has a good heart. The advice I'd give you is that you need to realize that some people look at you as just a paycheck. They will do whatever it takes to get ahold of your money and possessions. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't go to ATMs at night. Don't walk down dark alleys. If you're a woman and you go to a bar or nightspot, keep your drink with you at all times or some scumbag might dose your drink. Those are the basics! And stay away from the internet, there are some real psychos out there

Nucking, Thanks for the concern. I was more or less raised to be very wary people outside the community. "people" in part, were what my parents and select others were trying to escape.

 

Part of the reason I ask for help here is a fear of some people trying to take advantage in a face to face situation. But mostly I'm just too embarassed to ask what must seem like dumb questions.

It's a bit like being a fish out of water, isn't it? My background isn't the same as yours, but I've travelling a lot and know first-hand all about the little day-to-day things that are a mystery to me in a different culture. It's even worse where you don't speak the language!

 

Watch. Listen. Learn. And don't be afraid to ask.
