norudder
Qualified for an interview for a job I applied for a while back. It's federal (US) and their process is very slow. I've since realized the pay won't be worth the location and there are other opportunities I'm waiting to hear back on. However, it is still a chance to meet the HR staff who I might interview with down the road for other positions in other locations. Should I accept or decline? The drive for the interview would really be a pita.
CautiouslyOptimistic
YES. Go. You never know WHO the interviewer(s) might know outside of their organization and what other jobs they might know about. I don't think interviews are ever a waste of time.

d0nnivain
Go on the interview. You might be able to use that contact as an in for a contractor (you) to get more work. The position might offer benefits that make it more worthwhile. My DH works for the feds & their health insurance is amazing. Remember a guaranteed pension comes with this. Are you really going to be able to save enough through a 401k to retire at the same level? DH also rose through the ranks quickly to a much better salary.
Author norudder
I went. Good practice and confidence boost. Woman slipped that she looked forward to working with me. Even better though is that while in the interview I was left a voicemail for another interview for a position I'm truly interested in, passionate about the work, better pay and better commute. I wonder if that phone call would have still come if I hadn't been open to saying yes.... Hopefully good things to come. Thanks!!

You're absolutely right that the benefits offset many of the downsides. I'm vested, trying to stick with federal a few more years for further benefits but open to going private sector down the road. Just looking to move up the pay scale bands a bit
