grace06
My friend and I had hung out together. We both sat down across from each other and he started touching his face with his hand. At first he started tugging on the collar of his shirt for a few seconds, then he started rubbing his mouth area and the sides of his face with his hand throughout the start of our conversation. Soon after, he started copying my actions. I was touching my lips with the palm of my hand while resting my elbow on the table and soon after he had done the same while I was doing it. Or if I cracked my knuckles, he'd crack his knuckles. He and I had a really good talk with each other. Before I left, he stuck out his hand for a handshake and I shook it. He's never done that to me before and it's not like I was leaving him forever, just for a month. We plan on seeing each other more after I get back. We've given each other hugs before in the past. Why did he do that?

According to relationship magic books that I've read, this suggests that either he's so into you that he's unconsciously following your physical cues, OR that he's intentionally mirroring your behavior in order to subconsciously make you feel more comfortable and connected to him. But whether it's true depends on whether you believe that sort of books!
Mr. Lucky
Why did he do that? He obviously felt a hug or kiss might not be acceptable. If his impression is incorrect, up to you to correct him... Mr. Lucky

Dandelioness
Seems like he was nervous or self-conscious. Hugs can be superficial between friends. You're going away for some time and maybe he's going to miss you but isn't sure if a (more meaningful) hug would have been well received.
