Disturbing...do you like to watch violent movies?

I went to watch John Wick 3. The only reason is because I like Keanu Reeves. He was the perfect guy in Speed. I don't really care about any other actors besides him.

 

Only him makes the movie likable. Still, I think it's too violent. I can't watch the killing through the eye scene. Now, I don't understand Keanu. He is such a kind person. why he made such movies? what are we suppose to learn from these? is killing fun?

 

Apparently I seem to be the only one who doesn't like it. I talked about it over team lunch and the two family men like it, the one besides me who is also the most senior in the teams said he loves it.

 

For the life of me, I don't understand why people like watch people killing other people in the most xxxx ways? I can't even kill a chicken like that.

 

Is this a men thing? human thing? Do we secretly enjoy killing people like that?

 

any woman here like watching those kind of scenes?

At the same time I have a huge interest in True crime. In fact it's mainly what I watch or read. But I'm not interested in watching torture.

Women can be as excited by violence as men are.

 

My wife and I haven't seen the latest John Wick film yet. That said my wife has enjoyed the first two films and is looking forward to the latest iteration.

 

My wife has enjoyed almost all Quentin Tarantino films and a range of other films that depict violence. Plus she also enjoyed watching the Ash vs Evil Dead series as well.

 

As to enjoying killing, it certainly is a human thing. I have known people who have experienced war at the sharp end. Who although at times had experienced significant fear, they also found the experience of killing people to be at times a quite exciting one as well.

 

On the application of violence, it is inherent within our species. Human primates are by instinct violent and are killers. We humans will kill for entertainment, kill out of fear, kill out of anger, kill for advantage, kill for reward, kill for revenge, kill to assert authority and for a myriad of other reasons and we will kill our own, just as we will readily kill other species as well.

 

Let us not forget that much of the horror that sees genocides and other mass slaughters occur, are carried out by people (male and female) from all social strata, who are in effect no different than most people including us.

 

As someone who in the past has been required to apply violence professionally either personally or via directing others. While also having experienced violence directed at me in fights, and have done so against others in a variety of situations which have included protecting others.

 

My experience of it is that it is a very natural and visceral thing to do. Of which although it can be frightening and sickening, there is something inherently familiar and comforting through it being a most natural thing to do. Plus at times it certainly can be very exciting in person as well.

 

Which is why so many people feel excitement when watching depictions of violence on film, whether it be real or staged.

Personally, I love horror, true crime, and Quinton Tarantino movies.

My wife loves violent movies and was psyched when she saw the trailer for the new Tarantino movie. Violence and sex for that matter are a part of life and just because you enjoy movies about it doesn't that there is something wrong with you.

l love plenty of action but too gory turns me off a bit.

My ex wife didn't care how much gore was in it the more the merrier. She'd read psycho killer books watch the goriest real life hospital stuff she could get her hands on , you name it.

I don’t tend to like violent movies, particularly when the violence is realistic, such as in war movies. I haven’t seen the latest John Wick movies, but I enjoyed the first two (except when his dog got killed). The violence, and the whole movie really, seemed so stylized that it didn’t seem realistic to me, and didn’t really bother me that much.

When I watch a movie, I take it as entertainment (unless it is a true documentary). I understand while I am watching it the screen play was written and the movie made to entice people to come spend money and watch the movie. I know the blood is fake, the fight scenes are staged and the fantastic computer guys are doing all those wonderful special effects that make the viewer go "oh and ah"... So, if I watch a violent movie I know its fake, take it as such and enjoy the 90 minute diversion.

 

As for Keanu Reeves, my favorite movie he was in was "The Gift". I think he did an excellent job with the character he played. Keanu Reeves did play a bad man, but I think he did a great acting job. In real life, I'm sure he is NOT that character. Again, I know the movie was "pure entertainment" and not to be taken as fact or reality, so I enjoyed it as such.

I haven't seen any of the films, but it's very much a Hollywood thing. Violence and sex sells. Hell of an industry. It bothered me more as a kid than it does at this point, so long as it isn't over the top.

I used to watch violent movies but not much anymore. Nowadays I need to feed positive stuff into my mind to keep me from spiraling into the depths of sadness and hate.

i struggle to watch the news......and when i see animals die in movies or kids i have to tell myself its not real

 

passion of the Christ was a nightmare for me because i couldn't tell myself its not real.....that particular movie hit my heart and broke it.........i still cry in movies where people animals or kids die...even robots or grut from the guardians of the galaxy but..I cant tell myself that it isnt real with the news.....i get images .....

 

recently i had a dream(nightmare) from a news piece about a homeless girl who had mental problems and a drug issue killed in a melbourne park and found by dog walkers.....i got an image of a group of teen boys ...beating her....i hope they do find out who killed her and that she wasnt surrounded by hate......and that nightmare.... it was pretty lucid i felt it......and horrible.....i dont get that from movies....i get nightmares and lucid dreams from the news..

 

my first ever horror movie was about giant rabbits when i was about 7 i think...then bugs.....then empire of the ants...all at the drive in...never had nightmares about them..

 

i am interested in true crime and i have always wanted to do a criminal justice degree ...justice being the operative word.....i love to hear justice is around to heal hearts..deb

i watched the first two John Wick movies. They were ok. Highly stylized and the premise just isn't all that believable. I've lived around the world of organized crime, and it doesn't match with the reality I've seen. That said, sometimes it is nice to watch lots of shooting and blood flying around.

 

I don't have a problem with violence. I don't have a problem with enjoying violence. I don't have a problem with enjoying BEING violent. We live in a violent world. That said, sometimes it does get tiring. If you're dealing with it in everyday life, then sometimes you don't want to replay it while you're trying to relax. I totally get that it isn't what some people want to watch. My husband is like that. Unless he's in a certain mood, he doesn't want to see it. He doesn't even permit a television in the house. I have to go out to the shop if I want to watch a movie, and even then not when there's kids around.

 

What I do have a problem with is when Hollywood types make violent movies, and then come out as anti-gun or support leftist politics. I call that hypocrisy. I don't know anything about Keanu Reeves or his life or politics, just the Hollywood types in general.

While I enjoy a good action movie, I do not like violent movies. War movies are ok unless there's torture involved. I had to walk out of Braveheart in the theatre. Rape scenes, nope.

For what it's worth as someone who was a former infantry NCO who has done advanced ICQB training, and for a few years was later an intelligence professional. I think the drills in the movie Collateral were well executed and convincing, I was also impressed by the break contact drill in the movie Heat.

Yep. TV rarely happens for us. Laptop in the bedroom if I'm chilling, or the screen in the shop. And the kids don't see it at all. My husband will use films for educational purposes - to explain history, modern culture, and demonstrate the use of propaganda. But that's more for the older kids he teaches. His own kids are really young yet.

 

I think we could have a whole separate thread in the family section about kids and television!

Keanu's technique in the movies is definitely not bad. He's done a lot of work. The videos on YouTube are a good example of putting a lot of lead downrange in a hurry. Some other actors are doing training like this as well, so I think the shooting technique demonstrated in films is improving somewhat overall.

same here. I love action movies. I don't like scary, horror and violent movie.

 

Life is scary, horrible already, why watch more?

 

I don't even like to have scars on my body, therefore, do unto other as you would like other unto to you. why maim others then? I can only imagine how hard it is to give birth and raise a child, therefore, why just kill somebody like a fly? those people got killed like they don't have parents or/and children...and people enjoyed it? what if they are your loved ones? mind-boggling...

I totally get what you’re saying. When I saw the movie Braveheart, about midway, I had to walk out of the theatre because I was so nauseous. I detest violent movies and, for the life of me, can’t understand why it seems to be so important to movie producers for them to be so disgustingly graphic. I hate graphic games, too - whether it involves killing people or animals.

I'm going to take a wild guess that one's standing testosterone levels have something to do with how much one enjoys violent shows, etc. I could be wrong.

 

Personally, I tend to feel entertained by the excitement/high stakes that tend to be involved. I also like "historical vignette" type violence showing battles such as Braveheart, as well as the show Vikings and some less well done stuff that shows on History and Smithsonian channels. I also liked video games when I was younger, including first person shooters as well as games like World of Warcraft.

 

I do NOT like what I call murder porn in movies likes Kingsmen that seem to me to glorify killing people needlessly or simply show a person being murdered for no apparent reason. Usually it's just certain scenes that bother me - it's a fine line.

 

All of this has not, I think, truly inured me to real violence. I would be (justly) shocked and somewhat freaked out if someone was shot (or even hit by a car) on my street. Perhaps less so than I would be without media, but it's certainly not something I'd shrug my shoulders at.

I've read tons of True Crime books, seen many documentaries on serial killers. I even have the A to Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers, and I love gory movies. I can watch surgical procedures on Youtube for hours on end.

The only thing that turned my stomach was this episode of Hoarders where a woman was literally pooping in jugs and get a high off of eating fecal contaminated food. That was just nasty.

In general, I'm not a fan of gratuitous violence but it also depends on the director, actor(s), genre, screenplay and a bunch of other factors that can tip the scale from horrible to awesome.

 

The John Wick films? I personally love them and am going to see the new one tonight with my son and his girlfriend.
