JadeStar
I was wondering if anyone knows what this may be. My husband sweats alot and always has. He usally takes a shower at night before bed. However, after he gets up in the morning I notice that our bed sheets reek. Now it could be from where he sweats during the night, even though the sheets do not appear to be damp etc. My kids came and sat on the bed with me this morning after my husband left for work, and my son made the comment, "Ewwww mommy, dads side of the bed stinks!" I just washed the sheets a few days ago so they were fresh and clean however now they aren't. His clothes can smell the same way even after he has had a shower then puts them on once then they just stink. Its like this even when hes not sweating. So I guess my question is could it be some kind of enodcrine problem possibly? I understand he might want to mention it to the doctor but was just wondering if anyone has heard of someone producing a foul body smell even after a shower etc. Jade
whichwayisup
Has he always been like this or just recently? I know this is gross, but maybe he doesn't wipe properly after taking a poop. I highly doubt that is it cuz you'd recognize that smell... Get him to talk to his DR, it's a very touchy subject. How do you tell somebody you love they STINK? Without hurting their feelings. Cuz it is a turn off. Don't know what else to tell you, except maybe make a joke of it - Tell him what the kids said and see how he reacts...

It is genetic, not unlike chronic halitosis which is bad breath. No matter how much peopel brush their teeth or use mouthwash their breath still smells. I don't know what can be done about it medically.
Author JadeStar
Hey thanks for the replies. I just read something called hyperhidrosis, and its another name for people who sweat excessivaly. It can cause people to sweat alot on the face, palms of hands and armpits. However in more severe cases it can be all over body sweating as well. It can be from diabeties, some cancer, thyroid problems, obseity etc. Not meaning all people who sweat bad has any of these problems, but it can. WWIU, yes he has always had this problem and it doesn't smell like "poop" like you said, hehehe:p, and it doesn't smell like BO from armpit smell this is like a whole all over body smell, and its rank. Alpha, yeah it might be a gentic thing as well, and you're right some people have a smell that they can't do anything about. I will mention it too him and see if he will talk to the doctor about it. We have talked about it before and he doesn't seem to mind or be offended by it, especailly if its something medical that may be causing it. Thanks again. Jade
Craig
The sheets reek but does he? The solution could be as simple as switching to a different laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc. The odor could result from a reaction to anything that is coming in contact with his skin. Or it could be from something else. When you first met him way before your relationship started with him did you notice the odor then?

Outcast
If the man himself doesn't smell but the clothes/laundry do then it definitely sounds like some sort of peculiar chemical reaction. Of course both clothes and sheets will have been laundered with the same soaps, right? Do you use unscented products? I've found that rather than 'unscented' they can actually smell kind of unpleasant and of course sweat will bring out the odour. Since he sweats more than you, you don't notice it on your clothes or your side of the bed.
whichwayisup
Or do a test. He has a shower, let him wander around the house nude for afew hours, then sniff him. If he smells OK then it possibly could be the laundry detergent. Good theory Craig!

Good theory Craig! this is a medical problem WWIU...some peoples sweat gland produce a nasty odor no matter what they do. it is not some problem with detergent or soap or whatever. his body is to blame here... its a well documented medical phenomenon that occurs in both sexes... Outcast
Yes but alpha if the sweat doesn't smell bad on the man then it's probably not the sweat itself. Makes no sense.
Craig
I don't think so CRAIG Nevertheless it is possible and it is a lot easier and faster to first ask if the sheets reek in reaction to him or does the odor actually emanate from him. On the other hand it could indeed be something like trimethylaminuria.
alphamale
Yes but alpha if the sweat doesn't smell bad on the man then it's probably not the sweat itself. Makes no sense. it is not the sweat OUTCAST, it is the body that is doing this and emitting the fowl odor thru the skin. Sweat is actually sterile, it only starts to smell after bacteria is introduced as in under the arms and in the groin area. This is a medical condition that certain people have and there is not much they can do except wash their clothers a lot and take a lot of showers to minimize it.

For example it could be something taken by mouth including food, an infection and liver or kidney disease/failure.
Author JadeStar
I wash clothes/bedsheets etc right often especially with having 2 kids as well.My laundry detergent is not unscented, nor is the fabric softener. I like the fresh clean smell of clothes and linens. I would think though if it was a chemical from the laundry detergents that it would also break him out as far as having a reaction. Something I failed to mention was, he can come home and take a shower before bed. The towels can be clean etc and just after he gets out from taking a shower,he dries off and the clean towels reek. Thats something that just doesn't make sense being that he just bathed. So when the towels stink after he has had a shower I have to go get myself another towel because if I dry off using the towels he used even though they were clean, then I end up smelling like that. He even washes with anti bacterial soaps. He has used other kinds before as well and the towels after getting of the shower still stink. Before he showers yes he smells. After he showers no he doesn't smell, but yet the towels, bedsheets etc do. Someone asked if he has always had this problem, and the answer is yes pretty much so, but lately seems to be worse. I even thought that maybe the supplements he takes might be causing some of the odor, but not sure. He takes about 12 different supplements. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Thats something he just started about a year ago, but yet he has always kind of had this problem. Maybe the supplements are not helping with the smell? Thanks again. Outcast
Has he ever seen a physician about this? As Craig said, it could be a sign that there's something physically wrong and some of the things which could be wrong are fairly serious.
Author JadeStar
Hey outcast, no he hasn't ever mentioned this to the doctor. Maybe he is embarrassed, however we have talked about it and did say he thought he would mention it. Just wanted to clear this up too, my husband doesn't stink on a regular basis as far as this being his smell all the time. I notice it more so when he has been outside sweating etc. However I guess my concern is the shower thing, being clean but then laundry/bedsheets/towels stinking right after that. I wonder how they would determine what it is, maybe running some tests? Jade
Outcast
I would try different detergents/fabric softeners. Maybe even different fabrics. Maybe his body chemistry reacts badly to the fabric or detergents. I know some colognes smell like bug spray on me and that's just the reaction of the chemicals with my chemicals. What serious illnesses might BO be a symptom of? Sometimes a bad smell can in fact be a symptom of something worse. If you notice any of the following body odours, or any consistent odour that is not your normal personal smell, you may need to consult your GP for tests: A ’beery’ smell could indicate a yeast condition. The smell of nail polish remover could indicate diabetes. An ammonia smell could indicate liver disease. A fishy smell could indicate a metabolic disorder http://www.irishhealth.com/?level=4&con=
alphamale
. He takes about 12 different supplements. That could be it JADESTAR....I know that garlic is secreted thru the skin andsome others
Author JadeStar
Alpha, yeah I have heard of that about garlic. Thats one he doesn't take though. I will get him to look and see if some of those supplements he does take can cause an odor of some sort. Fish oil is one he takes and can be good for you, however he doesn't smell fishy. I don't know how to describe the smell other than rank:o Jade
