Mismatches in the Marriage Market

First published: 04 September 2019

Abstract

Objective

This article provides an assessment of whether unmarried women currently face demographic shortages of marital partners in the U.S. marriage market.

Background

One explanation for the declines in marriage is the putative shortage of economically attractive partners for unmarried women to marry. Previous studies provide mixed results but are usually focused narrowly on sex ratio imbalances rather than identifying shortages on the multiple socioeconomic characteristics that typically sort women and men into marriages.

Methods

This study identifies recent marriages from the 2008 to 2012 and 2013 to 2017 cumulative 5‐year files of the American Community Survey. Data imputation methods provide estimates of the sociodemographic characteristics of unmarried women's potential (or synthetic) spouses who resemble the husbands of otherwise comparable married women. These estimates are compared with the actual distribution of unmarried men at the national, state, and local area levels to identify marriage market imbalances.

Results

These synthetic husbands have an average income that is about 58% higher than the actual unmarried men that are currently available to unmarried women. They also are 30% more likely to be employed (90% vs. 70%) and 19% more likely to have a college degree (30% vs. 25%). Racial and ethnic minorities, especially Black women, face serious shortages of potential marital partners, as do low socioeconomic status and high socioeconomic status unmarried women, both at the national and subnational levels.

Conclusions

This study reveals large deficits in the supply of potential male spouses. One implication is that the unmarried may remain unmarried or marry less well‐suited partners.

way more women than men are graduating college so it stands to reason that they would be more likely to get the higher paying jobs

Sounds like a load of horse shyt to me, like most of these so called studies.

Any single guys l know are doing very nicely thanks very much, too nicely to risk some woman messing with it or losing it , again, in another divorce.

Sounds like the typical of running men down just because they can't find one to me.

l think the last one of these l skimmed , not that l take much notice of them there's a study for everything these days and no two will say the same thing , gave all the same stats only in that one it was men simply not wanting to get married again . They'd been there done that lost most of what they'd worked for and had no interest in going back to risking that again or in being married again.

As far as what they earn , ahhh, then why are women carrying on about being lower paid.

Funny what jumps out to you in an article.

Have to admit the definition didn't help me much:

syn·thet·ic

/sinˈTHedik/

LOGIC

(of a proposition) having truth or falsity determinable by recourse to experience.

Maybe it's too close to Happy Hour...

This has nothing whatsoever to do with men not wanting to get married again, nor about the ability of single men to get women.

This is about looking at married women, assessing their spouses sociodemographically and then looking at the pool of unmarried men available to comparable unmarried women.

They found the numbers of suitable (as compared to their predecessors) partners for these unmarried women to be lacking.

So "Racial and ethnic minorities, especially Black women, face serious shortages of potential marital partners, as do low socioeconomic status and high socioeconomic status unmarried women, both at the national and subnational levels."

So whilst previously a "quality" woman would find a similar "quality" man. These men are apparently scarcer on the ground so she may have to stay single or "settle" for something lesser...

What it doesn't tell you is how the two groups of women compare to their husbands in income, education, all that other stuff they measured the men on but not the women.

They must have done measurements on the women, otherwise how could they have paired the unmarried up with comparable married women?

How I read that is unmarried women or married women (comparable to each other as women, not comparable to their men).

What they are in effect doing is grading men and women according to sociodemographics, say 1-10, 10 being the top.

A "5" wife is on average say with a "7" husband.

They then looked at the availability of unmarried "7" men for unmarried "5" women and found a shortfall, similarly for other groups.

It is irrelevant how women compare to men.

They looked back at actual married couples, and deduced the quality of men that an unmarried women of a certain grade might be expected to marry.

They found that a comparable woman today may have to lower her sights as there are not enough of these unmarried guys of a suitable quality to go round.

Yes, I have been wondering how the mismatch in more women obtaining college education vs. men was going to play out in the long run. I believe around 60% of college grads are women vs. men, on average in the USA.

The thing is, it's only going to get worse...

Kitty Tantrum

Spend your youth chasing equal pay and developing a robust array of consumer addictions...

Then complain because there aren't enough men who make enough more money than you do. :lmao:

I saw this coming when I was a little bitty thing, it's exactly why I refused to continue past community college and deliberately gimped my own earning power at every turn.

Especially in the Black community women with college degrees outnumber the men 2 to 1.

It originates I think to the first woman-Nancy Astor to be elected to the British parliament and she considered herself a social class above her husband,

lol yes I thought it was comparable to the modern scenario whereby many women are of the opinion that a lot of ordinary decent guys are not good enough for them.

But the study is showing that frankly the available men perhaps now, but more definitely in the future, are not going to be "good enough" for them. Many are going to have to accept a lesser quality man than their status in life would imply.

I guess that is going to go down like a lead balloon...

A colleague of mine has a daughter in her 20's about to marry a guy. She's college educated now earning a good salary in high tech. He never went to college (not sure if he had ged or not), and only works some part time mcdonalds type jobs. He lives off of her, plays video games, doesn't want to go back to school.

Her father (my colleague) thinks the guy is not good enough for his daughter. But I know a lot of men on this forum are criticizing women for being too picky, that women should not think any man is not good enough. Anyway there's nothing her father can do. What I don't know is whether she wants to be the breadwinner and have a househusband, or she is just accepting it because she is emotionally attached.

I guess the latter.

Once she wakes up to realise "love" doesn't pay the rent or in fact do much of anything, she will rue the day she ever got involved with this video game playing man-child...

Again study was conducted and vast, huge, enormous amounts of money

spent and time used to realize what I could of told them for free.

For centuries:

There have not been enough hot women to meet the demand for a beautiful wife.

There have not been enough wealthy men to meet the demand for a husband

that can provide a very comfortable life style.

Because more women can now earn high incomes does not change that there

is still not enough men earning high incomes for the women to marry.

Also with technology changes eliminating high paying jobs,

shipping thousands of jobs over seas, having an increasingly gig economy

just will continue to not have enough high income men for women to marry.

And evolution has continued to not provide enough women that are 10s to,

marry.

Nothing new here.

Yes, I have been wondering how the mismatch in more women obtaining college education vs. men was going to play out in the long run.

People could start by getting off their high horse about a college education being the bees knees. They are now so common that they no longer guarantee a great income. A guy who has a good solid trade behind him (plumber, builder, electrician) earns well and will never be out of work.
