Economic Mismatches in the Marriage Market

Recommended Posts

I grew up in one of the richest suburbs in Massachusetts, home to politicians and astronauts and it never makes sense to drive a luxury car or go to Europe annually. You're coming at it from the perspective of a couple where both partners work. In many parts of the country two partner's each making 40k can have a really good life, even with a few kids. If I was single in Florida I'd be living great on 40k.

The city I live in, housing prices in the good neighborhoods don't really exceed 250-300k. In the so-so neighborhoods, 100-150k. Outside the city 50-100k. I could do better financially down here making 50k then I could up in the north east making 80. Plus spend my weekends enjoying the beautiful weather and beaches while the 100kers get to shovel out their cars every morning.

I feel like we live in a time where most households require that both partners work, would you not agree? Out of alllll of my girlfriends, only one stays home but her H makes well over 150k.

Look - to everyone their own choices. I just don't understand where all of these negative blanket statements are coming from regarding folks who go to college, drive a luxury car or whatever else. I think it's everyone's own business what they choose to do with their life choices and spend their money on.

As a college-educated person I don't think you have the right to tell me I "should" be ok dating someone with a different worldview. Just as I'd never tell anyone to date someone taller, or thinner, or religious.

Don't the 100kers pay someone to do that for them, like the blue collar plow guy (who can make a pretty penny on the side if smart about it)? Or at least have a snow blower? :)

I also just looked at the average salary for a welder. Right around 40k. I'd like to know how you could scrape by making a living on 40k in this country. Forget having a family!

My daughter is a welder, 3 years experience, making 65K + full benefits, she's just starting. I dated a welder of 20 years experience 5-6 years ago he was making 85K + benefits. There are several types of welding, if you are licensed in all of them then the sky is the limit.

That's great!
