Couldn’t commit - so I walked. Did I do the right thing

So had he not made you officially his girlfriend despite dating for the better part of the year?

That was your first red flag.

I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds really painful. I can't believe he told you about the lightning bolt moment. That was incredibly insensitive. Honestly, you deserve better than a guy that would disregard all of your time together with careless statements like that.

Whatever broke them up in the first place is likely still there. So don't be surprised if he does reach out again if they don't work out. Hopefully by then, you'll have someone new who is 100% invested.

"the lightening bolt"; however, calling you and telling you this is insensitive ! Who does that ???

Agree about the lightning bolt comment. It was a total disregard for your feelings. Very self-centered. That comment alone makes me think you're better off without him.

It they do end up together for awhile and it eventually breaks up he'll probably moon around about "what might have been with you." He sounds a bit melodramatic.

Seriously good for you OP. That shows so much self respect. For whatever it's worth, as a guy, this is a very attractive trait. You did the right thing. That is baggage that doesn't work out for anyone.
