Should I spend a lot of money to go to a convention like this?

Oh it's not that the classes are interfering with going though, i could do both.

Sure, iron pony! I'm thinking I've gotten a little opinionated on this thread. Sorry! And you've been very gracious! Just didn't want you to get ripped off, that's all.

Everyone is unique and has different experiences! You'll probably be the next Marilyn Monroe, Julia Roberts or some wonderful younger actress! Go for it!

say you are willing to move out there for a while and see if they will hire you, but would doing that actually work?

LA is full of bartenders, waiters etc that are aspiring actors. It's as I am sure you know a VERY competitive industry. I wouldn't move planning on actually getting acting work. If you are going to move, plan on working a day job.

even uf i fake sick days.

Faking sick days is about guaranteed to get you fired. Didn't you say 6 days? At my company any thing more than 3 sick days in a row requires a doctor's letter stating that you were unable to work.

And speaking of work - have you ever considered bartending or the service industry? Good chance to work on your people skills and earn more than you are now.

Because an industry like film - a lot comes down to people skills. If you can charm tips out of customers you will be in a better position to try to talk you way into paying film industry work.

Thanks, alpha! Sorry, iron pony. Guess you'll be the next Brad Pitt instead! Or some younger actor! ;)

Oh no problem, thanks for looking out for me. The opinions were not negative and I thank you for honest opinions that are wanting to help.

I never considered bartending, but I could try it, if any postings come up for one that I come across. Two of the days would be on the weekend, so it would only be three to four sick days, depending on the flight schedule. But it's probably too late to book a flight now, without paying more.... maybe I should go next year...

Perhaps I should just concentrate on making the feature film now, and then I can use that on my resume for next time I go, if I do...

Bartending, like most industries, best way to get your foot in the door would be by knowing someone. Do you know anyone that works in the service industry?

No one is going to hire someone with no experience to be a bartender - you would start with bar backing - washing dishes, prepping garnishes stuff like that.

Once you start learning the recipes and show that you can be quick and competent then you move into bartending.

I do recommended looking into the service industry though. Always jobs in the cities that have film industry. Decent pay - and if you're good, it can be good pay.

The stuff you are doing now for work sounds like dead end stuff that ties up your schedule.

Yeah once in a while there comes a filmmaking gig, but I would like to find more, to make a career out of it. I thought maybe going to the convention would help with the acting gigs.

I actually do not know about bartending much, I just said I could look into it, since it was suggested on here.

No. You have posted regularly about how you're likely to lose your job and also that you're having sleep / memory problems. Deal with these things before spending money on a model convention, especially since you don't want to be a model.

Edited to add: Uh oh, sorry about the layoff. That's a setback but not unexpected, right? No, you shouldn't have gone to the convention. A person with no source of income doesn't need to be spending money on something that's unlikely to be useful.

Best of luck on your job search though.

Yeah good point. I just if there are gig opportunities at the convention, it is now a convenient time to go suddenly.

On the bright side, that job made you miserable. It was a barrier more than anything for you. Now, that barrier has been removed. Enjoy your acting classes and if you want to go, then go to that convention just to see for yourself what it's all about. Like I said, life is too short. If it turns out to be a waste of time, then you'll find that out by going. Otherwise, you'll never know if you don't go.

The likelihood of going to this model convention and landing a paying job is extremely small.

Have you ever had a paying modeling job before?

Do you have the kinda of finances where you can afford to pay for something like this even if nothing is gained?

No, I haven't, but I've had some paying acting jobs before, and they said it was for actors too and not just models, if it's worth going for that, on a spur the moment, now that I'm laid off. I talked to two people who I know that have gone and they both got gig offers out of it. One of them moved to Italy temporarily for a gig, so that seems like a good sign.

Well it looks like it was too late to book a hotel since I got laid off and now have the time to go, but maybe next year then, for better hotel and travel deals.
