kunaka1000
Hi There I'm a 25 year old male, in my 1st full time job in IT. It's been almost two years now i have worked at my current job. For that period, majority of the time i have wanted to leave. its a small company of 4 people, 3 excluding my boss who's barely here. The two guys i work with, had my position before at our main and biggest client but were let go both less than a year on the job. There are lazy and want to get away with doing the least, even my boss has had enough but being him never does anything or say's much only when he is venting to me. Because i'm pretty much the most consistent guy, i somehow inherited everyone's responsibilities. From dealing with our client who have more than 50 user's, i have to deal with exhibition events as well which on its own is not an easy job, from setting up physically to troubleshooting if anything goes wrong to collecting our equipment when the shows are finished, i have to deal with camera work and this is on a site that is very large. & If i don't do it then no one else does and we get complaints, threats from our client which was the theme when i joined. I earn the least from everyone else, i haven't been paid overtime for over a year. With all this, i'm tired mentally and physically, i have never felt this way before, there days, i don't sleep tossing and turning just at the thought of going to work i wake up early than i'm supposed to. I want to quit so badly, right now it seems like the only option, but getting another job will be so hard because unemployment is quite high, i know from when i got this one, it took me a long time. I don't know what to do. i'm stuck i'm confused i'm sad i'v pretty much have heard enough, I just don't know.
LivingWaterPlease
You're under a lot of stressed. Possibly anxious and/or depressed and why shouldn't you be with all you're expected to do? Not sure what to tell you but I'll share that you need vitamin B's to cope. And then I'm trying Mito-Essence by Al Sears, MD, for stress. So far so good. Gives energy and makes your mind and body not realize how much they're stressing out. There's a list of 7 ingredients on the page and you can order the seven supplements in it from amazon for a lot cheaper (like 1/5 of the cost) that you can buy the product with all the supplements combined. Once you get to feeling better on that you may be able to cope more easily and figure out where to go from there. I don't think I can post a link for a product but you have the name of it above and can google it along with the Drs.' name. Wishing the best for you!
Mr. Lucky
One of the first - and best - bosses I ever had gave me advice that I've followed since - don't work for the company, work for yourself. This means perform to your standards, observe your values and make them need you more than you want them. I used situations like yours to try new things and learn new skills. Did I make mistakes? Sure, but they were on the company's dime and more than overshadowed by my contribution compared to others. You can make your situation a positive simply by taking advantage of the vacuum to stretch your wings and enhance your tool kit at their expense. Just takes a different mindset than your current approach, something to consider. i haven't been paid overtime for over a year. Not sure what the labor laws are where you live and what's involved in getting them enforced. You might look into finding out... Mr. Lucky
Eternal Sunshine
If I were you, I would stop working overtime without getting payed. Your boss has the responsibility to ensure there are enough resources to handle all the clients and business needs. This is not on you. Your boss also needs to realize the consequences when those needs are not being met. You are currently contracted to work x number of hours. Don't work a minute longer and let the chips fall where they may.
schlumpy
You are up against tradition. When a new supreme court judge heads for the court he/she spends the first year serving coffee to their fellow judges. Doesn't mater if he's the smartest one in the room. It called paying your dues or initiation into the club. I'm not saying it's right but one day the leverage will be on your side. You will have the time and the experience and will be able name your own price. Get them to depend on you and with that will come the leverage you need to get more pay and better hours. Happy Lemming
The last time I had a crappy job, I just did the bare minimum to keep from getting fired. I didn't put in extra time or effort. You are not an owner or stockholder in this company, so what does it matter what happens to that company or the other workers there. In the meantime, start sending out resumes', etc. in an attempt to secure a new job. In my youth, I do remember working my butt off in a similar situation. In the end, the company went bust (soon after I left). The other workers were laid off and the owner retired. What did it get me to work like crazy... absolutely nothing. Lesson learned (for the next crappy company).
Author kunaka1000
@LivingWaterPlease, thank you very much, I will definitely give it a try and see what I can get @Mr Lucky @Schlumpy it's very true what you said, that is exactly why I have stayed so long, to learn especially coming into an IT field which was completely different from my IT career path or what i studied and i must say i have learnt some much, one thing i am really grateful for, because I see myself having my own company one day. @Eternal Sunshine, that is true,& I have spoken to him about it and it's always excuses, and I'm one person that doesn't like always saying the same thing. @Happy Lemming, It has actually been playing around in my mind, just not caring anymore, cause pretty my motivation is just slowly going away. & I did start, I will keep sending out more cv's
d0nnivain
If you haven't been paid overtime but worked it in the US consult a labor lawyer. I get a little confused about the rules regarding OT & computer professionals but you should learn your rights under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Do not quit until you have another job lined up & do not use company equipment to look for or apply to any jobs.
ChatroomHero
So a company you work for, has 2 others that do nothing but were/are paid more than you, you do everything, you work over time for free and have basically all the responsibility with no major benefit...and you haven't manned up and said, ummm yeah, nope? Pay me back over time and OT moving forward or else I will work no more OT. Do you think telling your boss your boundaries will get you fired? Do you really think your boss will fire you knowing he would have to take on all responsibility and basically be shooting himself in the foot? If you went to a mechanic for an oil change and he said it would be $40 and then at the end said actually it is going to be $200, you'd man up and wouldn't take it. That mechanic would be trying to cheat you out of $160 you didn't agree to. But when your boss cheats you out of $1000s of dollars potentially, you think you have to just take it? Until you learn how to establish boundaries at work that work for you, like at a minimum getting paid properly for the hours you work, any job you get will be the same. I mean if you paid that mechanic $200 and just took it, what do you think he'd charge the next time you went in? If you are afraid to stand up for basic fairness and what you agreed you'd be paid for the job, there is nothing you can do. Until you are able to do that, it will be the same always.
