sam light
I'm a pretty casual guy. Always been an off the rack shopper. Lately I have this thought of trying tailored clothing for a change. Maybe it'll be worth it, maybe not. I won't know till I try. How does this work? I don't really have occasion to wear a suit. Is tailoring of casual clothing common? Do I buy off the rack and ask a tailor to alter it, or do I approach a Tailor 1st. How about in store Tailors like the men's wearhouse.? Can you tell I've never done this before? d0nnivain
You buy the clothes first but you need to buy good quality. It's not worth it to pay $40 to tailor a $9 pair of pants. Then you take the clothes to the tailor & that person nips & tucks, making the garment personal to you, a dart here, a pleat there, a cuff. . .whatever.

Happy Lemming
Many years ago, I did have some custom dress shirts made up by a tailor. It was a gift from a woman I was dating (at that time). In the past, I had just purchased my dress shirts "off the rack". The tailored shirts were OK, but if it had not been a gift, I would not have spent that kind of money on them. They didn't seem to fit all that differently from the "off the rack" shirts and they wore out at about the same pace. As far as suits, I only purchased one "new" suit in my life. As "d0nnivain" pointed out it was a little "nip and tuck" here and there, pants were cuffed to exact fit, etc. etc. That suit was a bit pricey. At that time, I was required to wear a suit to work. I really couldn't afford to have multiple "new" suits. So I went to second hand consignment stores and Goodwill. I found some very nice, gently used suits. They were perfect. In my collection (of suits) I have a very nice Italian suit, it fits me perfectly. I wear it on special occasions. It only cost me $40 at Goodwill.
preraph
Just exactly what Donnivain said. Well-fitting clothes will make you look better. I need to take a pair of jeans in. You can have custom suits made but they are pretty expensive. You might even find a reputable Taylor first and ask him what brand are brands are good to work on. I have an old boyfriend who used to have suits made. But for every day, just having them tailored to fit exactly is the best idea. Edited December 2, 2019 by preraph
