ironpony Posted December 15, 2019 Share Posted December 15, 2019 (edited) I've been trying to lay off of carbs a lot more lately, to loose weight, and eat more fruit and vegetables. However, since I started, I've been getting diarrhea a lot. I thought maybe this was just going to be temporary and my body will get use to it, but it's still not use to and it can be quite disruptive during the day, if I am busy or have to work. elaine567 Posted December 15, 2019 Share Posted December 15, 2019 Imodium is also not good if you actually have an infection causing the diarrhoea, hence why its use should only be for diarrhoea that lasts less than 48 hours and if no improvement go see a doctor. Meanwhile cut out the extra fruit and vegetables, then add them gradually whilst monitoring your stool. Link to post Share on other sites

CautiouslyOptimistic Posted December 16, 2019 Share Posted December 16, 2019 I think you should try a more graduate taper of carbs from your diet. Don't do such a drastic change. Also, add more fiber. Sounds counter-intuitive, but fiber works both ways - builds bulk and also softens. Link to post Share on other sites

Drink lots (and I mean LOTS) of water, go for several smaller portions rather than three big meals, and go to the doctor if it doesn't subside in a week or so. Link to post Share on other sites

Fruits and veggies are high in prebiotics - which is great for the gut, but you need a good colony of healthy bacteria to utilize it properly. Try eating things that are naturally fermented / heavy in probiotics like: Kimchi Fermented sauerkraut Kombucha Yogurt You can also take probiotic supplements. This can help your body adjust and become healthier. Also interesting there is a lot of new science showing a correlation between gut flora and mental health - if you guts starts to heal, you may see reduced anxiety and better sleep. Something like Imodium will stop the diarrhea but do nothing about the cause of it - better to cure your gut than cover up issues with drugs like Imodium. Eh....he said this has been going on for two weeks. I doubt the bottle says to use in situation like that. For example if it's from food poisoning or infection - as long as you aren't getting dangerously dehydrated - it's better to allow the immune system to do its thing - which includes the expelling of whatever has sickened the body - you don't want it staying in there. Or let's say this is caused by a food allergy, covering it up with Imodium could lead to a chronic inflammation situation. Imodium slows the digestive system - which may be beneficial - or may be harmful. Without knowing the cause of the diarrhea it's hard to know. I am lactose intolerant myself, so whenever I eat dairy products, it becomes unbearable, it feels like im crapping out pure stomach acid at times. It didn't, but when I gave up alcohol and processed foods guess what- no more issues. I still take metformin and almost have my blood sugar managed! This week I've had alcohol, loads of good european holiday foods ( high quality but still way too rich ) and not slept enough, so my digestion's off the other way...'bun' up' we said in ( Northern ) England 🥧🍢🍠🥫 Link to post Share on other sites
