post surgery food?

A friend just had cervical surgery.  She gets home from the hospital later today.  She asked me to walk her dog over the weekend.  I'm fine with that.

I want to bring her something because I don't know if she can bend / cook.  I was thinking of homemade soup & some chocolate chip cookies.   I want easy comfort food that is not hard to chew & that she doesn't have to bend down.  I didn't want to bring a heavy casserole that she'd have to put in the oven.   My normal go to is baked ziti but the weight might not work.

Does anybody have any better suggestions?

I like the home made soup idea.

I really like lentil soup, filling, no fat, high in protein, etc.

If you think her stomach can (maybe) handle something heavier. I make a mean "chicken and dumplings" dish.  Again, filling gets some carbs into the body along with some protein.

Cookies are fun treat and she can munch on them at her leisure.  I make a egg-less sugar cookie that keeps well.  I also add some food coloring to them, that makes them more "fun"!!

Sounds like a great choice.  Maybe some crusty bread to go with the soup.

just order a pizza and have it delivered to her crib

I don't want her to have to get up to answer the door.  I'd like to see her eat something more nutritious.  I'm sure her college aged sons ordered her a pizza.  Plus I'm going over there anyway to walk the dog; I just don't want to show up empty handed.

go to your local high end grocery store and buy her a gift basket that has snacks in it, you know....crackers, cheese, chocolate, pretzels, nuts, etc.....just stuff she can munch on when she wants to

Go over and offer to cook whatever she wants.  The idea of "no heavy food" after surgery is a myth.  It all comes down to personal preference, and eating something high quality so you recover faster.

I wasn't talking about heavy eating food -- I was talking about the physical  weight of the pan she has to put it in or take it out of the oven.

I'm not the best cook so I would not be comfortable cooking in somebody else's kitchen.  Cooking to order is a very sweet idea though. She & I have known each other since grad school but we're not that close so I'm not so sure I want to spend a ton of time in her kitchen.  She asked me to walk the dog so that is what I will do.

I wouldnt put too much pressure on her digestion yet,

mashed potato and a little boiled white fish,

dry toast dipped in tea.

invalid food as such give her system time to recover

Hmm... if you don't feel comfortable cooking, you could always just ask what she wants and then order it.  Tons of ways to be creative and thoughtful, but still within your boundaries.

I'm OK making soup so I think I'll stick to that plan.  If I'm feeling ambitious maybe I'll bring 2 kinds:  butternut squash and chicken noodle.

I think soup is the best idea. Something easy on the stomach. You might bring her some saltine crackers or club crackers to go with it.

Yes, soup! A baked apple would be good! Just core it, put it in the oven with butter and a little brown sugar in a little dish! A treat plus apples are good for you! But, soup's probably enough and the best idea of all! It's just mom always gave us applesauce when we were sick and to me, a baked apple is a grade above applesauce. And it's easy, too.

Boiled fish?  Toast dipped in tea?  You should see my face right now lol.  (That does not sound good to this American!)

I made soup, grilled chicken breast & scones.  I figure she needs breakfast too.

So I went over there.  She had a house full of people to do things for her.  The surgery was more serious & in-depth then we all thought it was going to be. The doctor had to move her esophagus to operate & she's still uncomfortable.  Glad I brought soup because she can barely swallow.  My scones are very buttery / melt in your mouth so she enjoyed the treat of eating something that wasn't liquid.    She had a 'fridge full of food & lots of people helping her.

Instead of walking the dog, I ended up bringing the dog home with me.  My friend has lots of people to care for her but they weren't "dog people."  My friend may now also being heading home to her parents' house one state over for some good old fashioned TLC & hovering by her mom.  This way the dog won't have to be in a kennel.  I feel like I'm helping & doing something concrete.

She has to be off her feet for 6 months in a neck brace.  She was an avid biker & skier so being immobile is "killing her".  Right now she's exhausted but as she heals she is gonna go stir crazy.

So glad you went over there with soup, d0nnivain! And it's extra good that you took her dog! Few people would do that, for sure! It'll take stress off of her to know her dog is cared for so well. Having stress removed will help her to heal more quickly, too! Taking soup opened the door for you to learn of a way to help even more! Great to read about this!

Not so sure I'm loving having the dog.  She woke me up at 5:30 this morning wanting to go out.  😣  Unlike my friend, I am not a morning person.
