Referring to a friend as wife

Recommended Posts

Hi

My coworker is good friends with another female colleague.

He phoned a guy today that works with her in her department about some work stuff and asked him 'where is my wife'?  He was referring to that female colleague.  She got married like a year ago  and I heard she is pregnant.

Why do you think  he referred to  her as his wife?

I am curious as I really like him ☺

He was joking but likely being serious at the same time but he referred to her as his 'wife' because he digs her. And if you like him, flirt with him like crazy so he'll know. Sometimes we're totally in the dark about it.

The term "work wife" has been around for a while.  The term means somebody who you are close to at work, who helps you, a bit above & beyond the normal required duties.  It's rarely sexual although there is an element of flirting.

How does this concern you?

Well, I was called my ex's work wife and it wasn't ALWAYS flattering!  To me, it really just denoted this level of familiarity, the good, the bad, and the ugly.  I think the one constant is it probably means someone they really depend on.

I think it was more a message to you then to her because it shows his comfort level when speaking with you. I think you have a shot if you don't let it pass by.

It is usually used by two people a man and a woman who work closely together often with the same or a similar job.
I personally think there is more to it than friendly workplace banter.
What does "a wife" usually do?
She tends to the man, tidies up after him and makes sure he is on time and organised.
Demoting your work colleague to "wife", can be seen as cute or friendly, but it is often about power.
He assumes the superior role, and she often being flattered by the attention complies, even if they are on an equivalent level or she is his superior...
It is a trick basically..

Some times, in a business setting... people will have a "Work Wife."  A long time ago... when I had a normal 9 to 5 kind of job... there was a girl who I got along with, and we worked very well together... and we always helped, and covered for each other.  She was often referred to as my work-wife.  My wife got along with her, and her husband knew about me. There was NEVER anything physical

Roll the clock forward 15 years... and she has been the shoulder I needed to lean on while my wife got crazy angry, and ripped our family apart.   I know most of the time it's not that way, but it was a deep friend bond that has lasted for a long time.

She has tended to you, smoother your path. have you tended to her?

it's a fun way to say we're close, even though it's obvious she's preggo and married. :)

it's a joke, and fun...

NOW... if she wasn't preg or married and looking etc... then i'd be more concerned... but as you described it... it's harmless fun.

I have... not physically... but mentally I've been there for her.  She is married to a typical "Man Child" and she has come to me looking for help.  And if anything good came out of my divorce,, is that it may have saved hers.  She does not want to put her kids through what mine have, and are going through. Because of that, she has been working, and talking with her H. (and I got her away from an EA she was having with a co-worker)
