Ashers
I went for an entry level job with a business. I didn't make it (they took someone with more experience) but did very well on the interview. The HR said they may have something else available. How long should I wait before inquiring about that "something"? Edited January 23, 2020 by Ashers
amaysngrace
You should show interest immediately. Did you not ask about the position when it was first mentioned?
alphamale
inquire now before they forget who you are Edited January 24, 2020 by alphamale
ChatroomHero
Yeah, reach out right away and thank them for the interview. Tell them they mentioned another position and you are very interested. Ask if they could give you any more info and if they know the time frame they might be looking to fill it. If they say immediately, you can ask to be considered and then ask if it is ok for you to follow up and call in a week or so. If they say in the near future, ask if you can follow up in a few weeks. Then follow through if you don't hear anything else. If they give you a don't call us, we'll call you, it's probably not all that serious. If they tell you, sure, you can follow up, that's a good sign and you are basically getting permission to follow up and won't have to debate if/when you should follow up. You'd be surprised how much timing can make a difference. They may have 100 resumes and completely forget about you a month later when they might be making a final decision one day and get a call from you and remember you. They might be considering a couple of people, you call and they think this one is really interested and follows through. So call right away and on that call establish a timeline to follow up.
LuckyM
Yeah, unless the HR was just being nice, throwing you a bone. I heard that line, too. It is weak consolation.
Author Ashers
Thanks for the responses. LuckyM turned out to be right, just a bone. I got a hold of the HR a few days after posting this & that was that. Really pointless thing to say as most people would be well into another job by the time 'something' may just turn up. spiritedaway2003
It’s a customary thing to say. I’d ignore it. True story: I did have a great phone interview once where the person assured me that she would pass my resume along. And she did, much to my surprise. I got a call for another position, though that didn’t work out. Good luck in your job search!
