When looking at requirements, how strict are employers.... especially when it comes to a master’s degree. I am applying for a job where I meet all the requirements, except I do not have my masters. I do have the experience, tech, personal and leadership skills however. Should I just pass over these jobs? I just don’t want to waste time Thank you!! Link to post Share on other sites

I've had people approach me about working for them, and when I say "I don't meet x requirement on your job posting" as a nice way of declining, they say "oh, that's alright, we can work around that" (so I end up having to decline outright). I've also done hiring for my team, and the requirements I post are almost certainly set in stone - that's why there aren't many of them. I explicitly separate "Nice to have"s into its own section. Some times with an on-line application, the system will kick you out & say no thank you if you don't check yes on certain qualifications. If you know somebody in the company who knows you are otherwise qualified you may get around the deficiency but rarely will that happen electronically. Link to post Share on other sites
mrs rubble Posted February 1, 2020 Share Posted February 1, 2020 The job I have now, was advertised wanting higher qualifications than what I have so I applied for another position I was adequately qualified for at the same place. I phoned up asking my old boss to be a referee for me, he was the one advertising the job I didn’t fit the qualifications for, he asked me to come in for an interview anyway. They offered the job to someone who was more qualified than me, but she turned it down as she’d gotten a better offer, so I was offered it. Ellener Posted February 1, 2020 Share Posted February 1, 2020 A lot of my work started out as volunteering, then I either started a business to fill a need or in the past was offered jobs; not as easy in business I know! But don't be afraid to go around is what I mean. The best businesses/bosses know they need the best most enthusiastic people and will work with you. My sister was offered a job conditional on she undertook her Masters ( in her own time! ) which would be paid for; she declined but these opportunities are out there! I had zero and got the job. For my current job they said at least 7 years of experience in X industry. I have 2 years. Still got the job.
