mortensorchid
I would like to share this with the forum because I have never done so before, maybe this will help someone out there. From about 2002-2005, I was going through a bad time. I was suffering from my first true broken heart (the love of my life had hurt me more than once, then he moved away at the end of 2005). I was a mess, commuting 70 miles to work everyday and eating out of control - and I was eating trash (donuts, ice cream, french fries, burgers, pizza, etc.). Just before THanksgiving of 2005 I was fired from my job. After the first of the year, my Dad made a certain comment to me about my weight and that triggered something within me. My reaction was to say "I'll show YOU guy! You always have all the answers and you think I can't do it?! I'll show you!" I did some research and found a local Weight Watcher's chapter, joined that night and never looked back. While 2006 would have some truly horrible things happen to me, this was age 33 which was my Jesus year while I transformed. In September 2006 my grand total loss was 40 lbs. I got down to the middle range of my high school weight. It's now 14 years later, and I gained back 30 lbs. I don't look the same as I did the first time it was on me like this (ex. pumpkin head) but I was feeling it around my middle and in the butt. I am also 45 so I might be at a certain time in a woman's life when her hormones are going to cause a disappearing waistline / gathering of belly fat. I don't think it's reasonable to want to get down to the middle range of my high school weight again, but I am going to take off at least 20 lbs once again. Rejoined Weight Watchers and I lost 2.4 pounds already. Moving forward ...
DKT3
Is it sustainable? True health requires lifestyle changes. Not much can have a huge impact. Something simple. Example oatmeal for breakfast w/fruit. An ounce of natural almonds mid morning, four ounces of meat, chicken turkey fish w/salad for lunch, yogurt mid afternoon and whatever you like for dinner in moderation. Stay away from soda or drink diet. Limit caffeine. Weight loss programs can be effective short term and can be expensive. To be honest what you eat isn't as important as when you eat. By eating every two hour keeps your metabolism active. As long as you stay away from sugar, breads and pasta the weight will slowly come off.
Lotsgoingon
Well good luck Mortensorchid. A woman I know lost about 30 pounds on WW ... and she has kept it off ... She joins the online community occasionally when she goes up ... but really she has shifted her eating habits. Weight loss in modern days unfortunately seems to be all about not getting demoralized when you put on some way ... and simply going back to eating healthy and living in a way that maximizes healthy eating. Congrats of the 2.4 pounds ... Also congrats on being realistic ... not just women, but we all burn significantly fewer calories as we age ... just metabolically ... and if I exercised like I did in my 20s ... I would be dead tired and aching for days ... at age 58. A friend of mine did something amazing ... and this is hard to do ... though it might seem easy ... He simply lost about 2 to 3 pounds a year ... for like ten straight years ... through changing his eating and taking up daily swimming. This strategy is hard because most of us get demoralized if we only lose 2 to 3 pounds in a year. He somehow had the focus and confidence to affirm that he was making progress ... so yes, he's lost about 30 pounds ... Anyway, good luck. Always remember there is a reward to eating in a healthier way (less compulsively) ... without even weight loss. Just the peace around food.
simpycurious
Good Luck MO. I would set realistic goals and work towards them. Weight is different for everyone so go easy on yourself
Realitysux
I've been in and out of the gym since I was 14, sometimes with trainers, sometimes without. The most effective weight loss is calories in and calories out. Food makes you fat therefore less of it makes you skinny or eating foods with less fat such as vegetables. Fruit is only good for weight loss if eaten on an Empty stomach! The workouts have changed over the course of 20 years but the best cardio is arobics or intervels. I am able to get back into shape but I'm more worried about the damage to my face from neglect!

I probably overdo the cardio which could one day could be bad on my knees and ankles but I enjoy it. I am not a big eater so the food part isn't as much of an issue but I do agree that being consistent in whatever routine you adopt is key.

If you eat small meals during the day hours and have a cut off time then your metabolism will improve but most often this habit turns into over eating which is why I didn't post on that .. for emotional eaters, would not recommend! As far as my face goes, well I'm not sure what happened but I don't look young and fresh and my skin is not as vibrant as it used to be. I have only started getting healthy about a month ago so it does take time. I've had to get into shape before but I've never had to repair my face so I'm nervous about that. Mental health is very important! More important then anything else. I am trying to get healthy mentally, emotionally or as I like to call it mind, body and soul, which is why I'm on my way to church this morning.

Author mortensorchid
I have dropped 13 lbs since starting this. Weight Watchers is on suspension for the Corona Virus so I may have dropped even more since, but I am feeling very good about myself.

FMW
That's awesome! I'm stress eating right now and not getting much activity, so I'm certainly NOT losing weight. So I'm impressed!

I have always been very fit and never had issues with my weight but I have several friends who I played with that have had trouble losing weight. What I discouraged through watching them is that EVERYONE is different, EVERY BODY is different and what seamlessly works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. The one thing that seems to hold true is a combination of a change in diet (intake) and some sort of exercise. You should be proud of what you have already done
maintainsub
Good job for losing 2.4 lbs. Remember not to be too hard on yourself. Make sure follow a healthy diet.
