littleblackheart
My son came home with continuous cough and flu-like symptoms (he said he coughed all day, confirmed by school nurse) so we all have to stay at home (him for 7 days, daughter and I for 14 days). We're fine and prepared to stay indoors for the next 14 days but my mind went straight to screen time and ways to avoid too much of it. Do fellow parents in a similar situation (or who have a great imagination) have tips to alleviate the predicted boredom that will ensue?
carhill
Catch up on household projects..... I could work for a year and never leave the property. If not in close contact, getting sun can help. UV. 1
Author littleblackheart
Thanks. Luckily we have a balcony so might be our saving grace. I think I can keep myself and the little one occupied, but my son (full blown teenager) will be tricky. He's gone straight to bed as he says he's feeling weak, non stop coughing with a little temp (38.4). Trying not get to worried - I keep telling myself it's likely just fine, but he is freaking out. carhill
Home is different for everyone. I tend to forget space. Some have little, some a lot, and the chores that go with it. I can go a week and not see a human, big space. ............Video games, learn card games. Open curtains let sun in. Routine, chores, it works out..
nospam99
For boredom, board and card games. You and daughter can take a walk. Just stay away from other people outside. Son can join you walking when he feels well.
Author littleblackheart
We've actually been told not to leave the house at all. We're not under confinement when people can take a walk or nip out for some shopping. We have to avoid contact with others as much as possible, so no walks unfortunately.
Els
I know gaming tends to get a bad rap around here, but I've found it indispensable for times when I could not leave the house (like a major 3-day cyclone where it was dangerous to step out). MMORPGs especially have a lot of social elements involved, just have to make sure not to go overboard with how long you spend on them. Aside from that, other kinds of games like card games, board games, physical games (ping pong? twister?) could work. Reading can suck me in for 5+ hours at a time. Other people like to make art, bake/cook, knit, tinker, etc. Could do a bit of "homeschooling", read encyclopedias with them or watch documentaries, etc. I actually think the trickiest part would be to make sure that people aren't getting on each others' nerves due to the close 24/7 proximity. But if you have a reasonably large house and everyone gets enough space I think that would be alright.
preraph
I culled out some of my old clothes for donation. I still have work but probably not for long. I still need to bag them up. There's always something needs to be done. Then you relax and play games if you have nothing else to do. 1
preraph
What sucks is that you can't even have a good time watching daytime tv or nighttime really because it's just coronavirus this and coronavirus that. Ugh. We need entertainment, not more scary stuff!

Our place is not that big but it's comfortable and we each have our own space so we're not on top of each other. I have a friend dropping off a few board games (she'll have to leave them on the porch, though - no coming over for a coffee )but I have an inkling that keeping a 13yo boy from his console will be mission impossible! @preraphHaha, the C word is now forbidden in the house. He'll freaked out enough as it is.
preraph
It's just me and my dog, but I will have to leave the house. I can go out in the backyard and I can go anywhere in my car just driving, maybe go pick up food curbside when I get restless, and I need to go to the office and pick up my check. I'll be having to leave some, but it will be comfortable here. My last couple of months had been so hard and unsanitary when my old dog was sick but I had a crew in last week to clean house, even though I couldn't rightly afford it, but I'm SO glad I did, or this would be so miserable right now. Now I can work on keeping the house tip-top, now that the deep cleaning has been done. Run a dust mop every now and again, do a load of laundry....

Can you have a ROKU shipped in?? Plenty of free channels, ROKU-TV, TUBI-TV, Pluto, Crackle, Filmrise, just to name a few. Moreover you can stream youtube videos to your TV with that ROKU (free). I am making the assumption that your modem has wifi (which you will need).

Thanks, I'm sure I could but honestly antenna has more than enough- and old-fashioned simplicity insulates me from the noisy news and endless 'bottom-of-screen' comments on the pandemic. Feeling calm and trying to stay that way 🙏 Namaste!

preraph
I like to sleep with the tv on real low, but right now, it's just giving me nightmares no matter what channel pretty much. I can sleep to Law & Order real good and sometimes even the ID channel, though that one is risky. Can't sleep to anything with game shows, bells and buzzers (which are on everything -- it's ridiculous), kids, or weird noises like you'll get on DailyMailTV, which make me think it's in the house! Jeez, what is it with these people putting annoying sound effects into stuff like that for just gratuitous reasons?

preraph
I would like that okay, but I think my main thing is I like to not feel alone when I wake up in the middle of the night, which I do all the time, so having some human voices helps, plus drowns out other things, but I do it real low. This started when I was a kid and just couldn't hardly sleep because of fears and hearing things. Sometimes it sounded like I could hear a bunch of people in the distance. I think my room was kind of haunted or something. So when I got a radio by the bed, that was a relief.

Els
I'm completely different from you guys. If it's not completely quiet (with the exception of really low noises like the air conditioning running), I can't sleep, lol.

Author littleblackheart
Not sure how this thread has turned into a discussion on sleeping habits, but in any events, thanks all for the suggestions!
