d0nnivain
Alone in the vehicle may be because they don't have the chance to sanitize their hands before & after touching their face to remove the mask so it's safer to keep it on until that option is available. Its' more then wearing the mask. It's the protocol of putting it on & taking it off. On the river fishing I would think they didn't want to fuss with a mask with wet fishy hands. Seems reasonable to me.

More than once I've seen people wearing masks while driving in their car with the windows up, alone in the vehicle. That's ridiculous looking. People spaced out along the river fishing, wearing masks. People in swimming pools, wearing masks. These are things I've seen. It is so new that it seems strange to many. Except it has been many months now so actually isn’t so new. What looks ridiculous to some subjectively looks acceptable to others, especially anyone who embraces the scientific approach to slowing virus transmission. If I am at a store wearing a mask, I will keep it on during the drive home until I can take it off with a sink nearby so I can immediately wash my hands. I could give a sh#t if I look ridiculous to (general) you. When I see people wearing masks alone in car, it’s obvious to me that they were just grocery shopping or picking up takeout or were somewhere in public where they needed to wear a mask and that they are waiting to take it off properly in a place they can clean their hands thoroughly. Hand sanitizer is not as effective as thorough hand washing. They are smart for doing that. Here is a current article about mask wearing having the potential to help (to me it’s simply amazing that there is still judgement around mask wearing, meaning the “people look ridiculous” comments. 😞 https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/07/23/894425483/can-masks-save-us-from-more-lockdowns-heres-what-the-science-says Edited July 23, 2020 by greymatter Typos

If that's so, the steps you're describing make very little sense.
Ruby Slippers
I also don't understand why some people are so judgmental about others wearing masks whenever and wherever they want to. I don't care if anybody else wants to wear a Chiquita banana headdress. It doesn't affect me, isn't my business.

What he/she is describing is actually proper protocol to reduce cross contamination. The mask is considered contaminated, so you're supposed to immediately wash your your hands after removing the mask. The most high risk time to contaminate yourself is when you're removing PPE.

You have been touching things in the store. The virus may have gotten on your hands. When you bring your hands up to your face to remove your mask, that is how you get contaminated & sick. Learn the protocols. If you don't it's all just a bunch of empty gestures.
Ellener
I did everything to keep from getting sick and still- we all are getting sick here in Houston. It's in the Bible, to everything a season. Also the Lord works in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform... When hope seems lost is the time the most wonderful things happen. God is love. But wash your hands! Someone on LS mentioned taking some soap and gallon of water with them, when they go to the store, so that is what I have been doing. I take liquid soap, gallon jug of water and a small hand towel with me when I go to the store. After putting "whatever" in the trunk of my car, I was my hands right there on the parking lot with soap and water. Really great idea, but I can't take credit for it.

Some do but there are reasons not to keep hand sanitizer IN the car in hot weather. Even before Covid I always had hand sanitizer in my purse just in case. Some people may like masks. Why do people do anything?

sothereiwas
Working again, of course. Later I think I'll take the kid out to the club fishing pond for a look around, and probably fill out a form and gift dad a membership. The wife is cooking some delicious smelling chicken and vegetable thing, so I guess I know what's for lunch.

I was having small panic attacks over the locals going on about it, like it was nothing to worry about, and acting like those of us who are careful, are weak and scared. The numbers have been shooting up, and now a local woman is on a ventilator - we were in the green, last month. Now we're on quarantine lists for other States.

You know...I figured by now these types of people would accept Covid for what it really is, esp. with the local stores requiring masks before entering. No worries, soon they'll have to accept it and partake in it all. Sure you'll see probably one of them go viral when they go into a hateful rage in public, being escorted out of a Wal-Mart or an Airline..so be prepared for that. Smokers made a big stink out of places banning smokers indoors/public spaces, but it'll seen be accepted...because...they'll have to. It's almost nothing to worry about here, I'm sure in hot zones it's a huge real issue. Our seeming inability as a group to grasp that the conditions everywhere are not the same as New York City is alarming and a mild irritant but whatever. People here mostly behaved reasonably before any mandates were in place and mostly continue to do so. In this county we've had one resident die, and that person was fine until they went to Texas, got infected in Texas, were hospitalized in Texas, and died in Texas. That's a pretty high level of effort to become the first and only.
Ruby Slippers
I'm pleased to report that my application was approved and soon I'll start virtually tutoring/mentoring homeless/disadvantaged kids. I've been meaning to resume tutoring for a while and feel great about this. When I've done this in person in the past, it's been so rewarding to see transformative change in the kids' lives as they start to see the power of focus and discipline. Most of them just need a little attention and focus beyond what their struggling parents, often single and working several jobs, can provide. I was also pleased to see that a lot of people are virtual volunteering right now and some places have waiting lists. Awesome! I encourage anyone looking for a meaningful way to help and a source of upliftment and fun to look into this. Edited July 25, 2020 by Ruby Slippers

Ellener
I'm in Houston and we definitely thought we had it beat @sothereiwas in the first few days, we thought we were going to deal with it like we deal with the endless flooding or a hurricane or the forest fires a few years back...but it's not been like that. It's just been an infection run rampant through the international community, and now it's here. We are back in flood watch today, just at the coast. I don't think Houston will flood- what do I know, I know, but you develop an instinct for reading the weather when you live here. Meanwhile according to our Houston Chronicle Covid is • 379,257 cases in Texas, including 4,795 deaths. • 89,726 in the Houston region, including 867 deaths. • More than 4.1 million in the U.S., including 145,333 deaths. Could we have done it differently? I don't know. We have to move forward from where we're at.
sothereiwas
Today I have to decide between some range time or foregoing that and getting more done. Probably the latter. Maybe get a leg up on the workweek this evening. As for chores, I have a huge organizational task in the shop I'm pecking away at, so maybe that, and the old F350 needs a seat cover installed, as the old seat cover was shot and I'd like the OEM seat to remain pristine. Maybe also install a battery tender on it. Perhaps fiddle w/ the home LAN later, perhaps not.
Happy Lemming
I went up on the roof this morning and trimmed a tree that was overhanging and just about touching the roof. I don't want the tree to scrub the roof and damage it, so I get up there from time to time and trim it back. My loppers made quick work of the new growth and that job was done before it got too hot outside. I'm about 90% done with my kitchen countertop. I have about two more days of cutting and polishing granite. I was going to work on it some today, but my tile saw makes a lot of noise. My elderly neighbor couple have their grandchildren over on Sundays to play in their pool, so I don't want to ruin the good time with my tile saw. I'll get back to it on Monday.

Of course we still can’t go eat inside a restaurant unless two walls are missing but with the weather being what it has been lately who wants to eat inside anyway?

DarrenB
Gyms have reopened here in the UK as of the 25th, so I've reinstated my PT courses to help with gym and membership advertisement. However I have noticed that during the past 2 days unfortunately a lot of people are still neglecting the regulations put in place to help e.g wiping down equipment after use, staying longer than 60-90 minutes, working out with groups more than 2 or 3...
