ironpony
I was offered a job, a really high paying job too, compared to what I've had before, and my parents discouraged me not to take it. I just told them I want to wait until this corona virus is over. Three weeks later, they called again, but I missed the call. I can wait to call them back and think about it, but my parents say don't take a job right now, because they cannot have me possibly bringing the virus home. What do you think? Should I respect their needs more, or should I just take the high paying job, and risk it, even though it will cause a lot of drama with them probably? Or should I roll the dice and wait, hoping they still want me after the pandemic is over? Edited April 2, 2020 by ironpony
elaine567
As your parents are "older" and do not want you bringing the virus home to them, then you need to respect their wishes. As their health or lives may be on the line here, then why would you want to risk that?
K.K.
^^^ This. You haven’t been working all that much anyway. Why start now when it could potentially kill your parents? Not to mention, their house their rules anyway. There will be other jobs, ironpony. 🙂
Foxhall
If you take the job you would have to move out and live elsewhere, I presume you are doing grocery shopping for your parents, you could still do that if you take the job and leave it outside the door, Alternatively by taking time out it might give you time to work on film plots and so on, still if this job has good money, might be best to take it, though absolutely only on condition that you would move out and not put your folks at any risk. Author ironpony
Okay thanks. I do grocery shopping but that is all they want me to do. It's just I feel guilty collecting on unemployment insurance when they ask you on the insurance, if I am looking for work, but I am not taking jobs, because I don't want to put anyone I know at risk. But my parents say everyon is one unemployment insurance because of this and it's nothing to feel guilty about, even if you are avoiding jobs, if that's true?

Unemployment is soon to be a windfall in the USA... So if you signed-up before the rush, you'll have the best of both worlds.

You'd have to check your own state but here it's explicit: 'TWC will be waiving work search requirements for all claimants'. That's just for during the state of emergency. So don't worry about it for now. In other circumstances, yes, but priorities are different during a pandemic. Use this as an opportunity to work hard on your screenplay writing. That's what I'm doing, catching up on tons of creative stuff I kept telling myself I haven't had time to focus on: no excuse right now! All I have is time 🕰️ 😄
Author ironpony
Oh okay thanks. Yes I've done a lot of writing and other arranging of filmmaking on my time off now. However, I guess I just can't help but feel guilty about lying to them about looking for work in order to get money, when I am avoiding work so I don't catch the virus. But my parents and friends say to just lie to them anyway about looking for work.
Art_Critic
I would stay home with them and not take the job if the job puts you in contact with people. Right now Amazon is trying to control it getting ready to go thru their warehouses and distribution centers. I do feel you however, I am still working and I have an elderly father in law living with me and my family I am an essential business as I am working on a hospital getting ready to open it's doors this month, I won't be after the project is over however. it does worry me, I lather down in hand sanitizer and leave my shoes at the door, my clothes and PE gear go in the laundry as soon as I get home. I also take my temperature 3 times a day and next week as my state is requiring will be doing screenings at work. Be safe IronPony.. stay with them till this is over Edited April 3, 2020 by Art_Critic

Author ironpony
No I didn't check yet, cause I am not sure what to do. I could check but they will take a long to get back to me about that probably, since they are swamped now, with others also applying because of the pandemic. However, I don't feel this corona is going to go away, because it keeps getting worse. Eventually we are going to have to go back out and go back to work and we will all get the virus soon enough. Some of his may live, some may die, but we are all going to have to go back into the real world, and get the virus, and just accept it, won't we? Am I being realistic, or am I looking at it the wrong way?
amaysngrace
I think you’re seeing it realistically. I have two kids at home and they’re both still going in to work as scheduled. Yes we’re all gonna have to go back to work eventually and I think the exposure you’ve probably already had will help to have built up resistance. A little exposure is exactly what a vaccine is,

Am I being realistic, or am I looking at it the wrong way 😭 (((((((( ironpony )))))))) Maybe realistic. But I think they’ll get a handle on it eventually so that we can all go back to life as we knew it. Albeit changed maybe. It won’t ever be exactly the same. Just do what you can do to keep yourself and others safe. There’s not much else we can do.
Author ironpony
But if I am seeing it realistically, then why should I stay at home with no job for months then? If we are all going to get the virus anyway, and we cannot stop it, then why wait? Why should I not just take the job now then, since we cannot escape the virus anyway?

Ellener
Is this some kind of power-struggle with your parents? I mean, you've had months to get a job when they wanted you to do that, and now it's not appropriate you're considering it? This is why adult children need to be independent...don't you drive each other crazy?!
Author ironpony
I've had temporary jobs over the last few months where I recorded sound for some shooting productions. Those jobs paid decent. I was also looking for a permanent job during this time. But my shooting gigs were cancelled a month ago, because of the virus. I don't think my parents feel I wasn't looking for work, since I got on productions that they seemed excited about for me. And they are telling me to stay home now for everyone's health, so I don't think it's a power struggle with them. Is it? They are in their 60s but they take care of my Grandma at my Grandma's place and are worried about her getting it was well.

We are not "all" going to get the virus - ever. IN the USA it is set-up, unemployment-wise, so that those presently on unemployment will get a windfall from all of this, even though they were already on unemployment. Furthermore, they don't even have to go through the agonizing lines and waits to get signed-up, as they're already signed-up. You'll have to check to see if Canada has something parallel to that. The main reason you're staying home (as is the case with EVVVVeryone staying home right now) is so you won't UNKNOWINGLY SPREAD THE VIRUS to scores of others.
Author ironpony
I'm also worried about losing worried about money, if I don't take job. I was planning for a feature film shoot this year, as a career goal investment, and I really could use money to be making in the meantime, if I am to have enough to make the movie, after this crisis is over. amaysngrace
Not everyone is going to get it. Just like the flu or chicken pox or strep.
Author ironpony
Well everyone is treating corona much more like a pandemic though, because no one shut down the whole country because of strepthroat, chickenpox, or the flu. So people are taking this one much more seriously than those ones, as if this one is more powerful and much harder to beat. Edited April 3, 2020 by ironpony
amaysngrace
It’s because there’s no vaccine or cure because it’s so new. The others we can fight, this one we can’t. That’s the difference. Edited April 3, 2020 by amaysngrace
Author ironpony
There use to be no vaccine for those ones, either, and countries around the world didn't shut down because of those. So doesn't that say there one is more powerful?
