Ellener
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-norfolk-52133766 'A "humbled and emotional" paramedic has thanked a stranger who paid for his shopping and customers who applauded him at a supermarket. People queuing outside Lidl in Cromer, Norfolk, made way for David Tillyer - who had just finished a night shift - "with applause and thank-yous". He said a woman who "ran up and swiped her card" as he went to pay told him: "Not much you can do to stop me". ' 2
Foxhall
this virus will give many of us a taste of isolation, loneliness, boredom, solitude and so on, there will be people who will have experienced these emotions regularly before there was a mention of this virus, when the virus hopefully disappears sooner rather than later,it would be good for everyone to consider the forgotten people of society, the people who suffer from isolationism and do their bit to reach out and include them
Author Ellener
I agree. I don't mind the self-isolation, I have lots of friends and meaningful work and I'm an introvert who loves my own company. But lots of people must be scared and lonely. I've been writing cards to people who live alone on my church directory and seniors I know. I've been thinking of people living in dire poverty overseas ( and here ) too, how difficult it must be not to have clean water or a comfortable bed or enough food; makes me appreciate everything I have right now.

Miss Spider
Awww that’s a nice story. Someone gave my puppy some whipped cream. But saw one lady go off on a guy slightly for standing too close at UPS. People are scared they’re gonna catch the ‘rona. Edited April 3, 2020 by Cookiesandough
simpycurious
Being kind is never "out of style" and maybe more important today and tomorrow than ever before. Just a smile can brighten someone's day and that doesn't take much effort. My Mom loves flowers so I am having A TON sent to her house very insignificant in the scope of life but her smiles are priceless to me. Maybe call someone or send them an email these gestures matter a lot and more than most realize. Edited April 3, 2020 by simpycurious

Woggle
My wife and I are buying the local grocery store pizza. They are putting themselves out there and have to deal with a lot of jerks so they deserve it. 2
mrs rubble
I've watched my friends children in her car while she went shopping, as she couldn't leave them at home and couldn't leave them with anyone and there's only one allowed in the supermarket at a time. I also signed a friends family up for free ambulance services if they should need it, he has emphysema, and is very poor. Just a couple of little things that I can do. 1
amaysngrace
I had to run down to the store and along the road was a Dad with two little kids who were waving to cars as they went by. After not being able to be sociable it was really very sweet to see. Of course I waved back big. 3
Author Ellener
Went to drive through bank today and the teller said 'sorry, we dont have any dog biscuits today' ( they always send one down for my dog ) and we both burst out laughing at the unusual banking communication 😀🐶 2
Author Ellener
Just been reading this article https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-52094332 'Consider a study of more than 600 medical students, which found that the selfish ones - people who focused on their own progress, and cared little for others - performed very well in their first year. These "takers" were good at extracting information, and by offering little in return they were able to focus on their own progress. Those who were more generous with their time and were willing to offer insights to their fellow students, the "givers", got left behind. But here is the curious thing. By the second year, the kinder cohort had caught up, and by the third year had overtaken their peers. Indeed, by the final year, the givers had gained significantly higher grades. Indeed, a kinder attitude was a more powerful predictor of school grades than the effect of smoking on lung cancer rates. What was going on? The givers hadn't changed, but the structure of the programme had shifted. As the psychologist Adam Grant has written: "As students progress through medical school, they move from independent classes into clinical rotations and patient care. The further they advance, the more their success depends on teamwork and service. Whereas takers sometimes win in independent roles where performance is only about individual results, givers thrive in an interdependent roles where collaboration matters." ' Interesting, but I have always found that kindness brings a lot of benefits, and being around kind people does too.

I think that's a great idea Mrs Rubble. Support local businesses as much as possible. I have not gotten to the point where I am scared of getting take out (if I do I might starve). These local eateries need as much business as possible. One thing that I have NOT done is let my cleaning people come like I normally do. I am starting to feel guilty and may just pay them anyway as per my normal schedule.
mrs rubble
Simpycurious, nice of you to think of paying your cleaners, I think we should all help out however we can, if you can afford to help out do so! I’ve been watching those kids again today, weekly agreement, she’s a solo mum and I’m pretty much the only one who can help her get her shopping done. She tried giving me chocolate for doing so, I was having none of that, her and her kids deserve it more than me! Our takeaway/ fast food service/ Uber eats has been locked down for 2 weeks tomorrow. The whole country are cooking their own meals!
Author Ellener
Some car insurers are giving back in the US, Allstate and American Family Mutual so far- https://www.bbc.com/news/business-52194521 '"This is fair because less driving means fewer accidents," said Tom Wilson, chief executive at Allstate. Its data showed driving mileage was down between 35% and 40%.'

You can kind-of tell the ones which will here, they already got 'with it' the new situation and hung banners with a phone number and set up pick up points and posted online menus. I've been using one fancy place, and a local Subway to pick things up for my son. As a gesture I'm going to start eating out for a few days next week, ordering pick up then take it to the park and eat in my truck- my new restaurant experience! I will say though eating processed food ( and I'm sure next week even the healthy take out ) all the extra salt pushes up my blood pressure...
Eternal Sunshine
I was at the supermarket yesterday and was buying some cheeses and fruit for my Easter for 1. I forgot my wallet and only had a $50 bill in my pocket. I was trying to add all the items and thought they were just under $50. It turned out to be $52.25. I told the checkout lady that I will need to take one item back. Lady behind me overheard and said "I will pay. We all deserve a good Easter". simpycurious
never let chance go by to do something nice for another person....pandemic or not. a gesture does not have to involve a gift, money or anything tangible but it can be as simple as a HELLO, a wave, or even a smile 1
Libby1
There's been a lot of coverage here of Captain Tom - a 99 year old veteran who aimed to raise £1000 for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday. He completed the task ahead of schedule, but rather than raising £1000, he's raised something like £23 million (although it says £12 million in the video, there have been a lot more donations since then). Here he is, completing his 100th lap and being saluted by soldiers from the 1st Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Edited April 18, 2020 by Libby1 1
