Speed dating match started crying about losing her father

During my virtual speed dating one of the women I was chatting with had a couple pictures prominently displayed behind her. So my 1st question was "is that your family in the pictures behind you?"

Then she took the picture of her parents and told me the whole story about recently losing her father and started to cry. Before this I was going to try and keep things light and fun, but obviously this was a very serious subject and I felt horrible and some pain as well thinking about people I've lost. At this point I let her know I felt sorry for her loss and we talked about this for a while and then I steered the conversation to other subjects for the last couple minutes.

She wasn't someone I was interested in romantically, but I genuinely felt really bad for her and almost put down I was interested just so she'd have someone to talk to, but then thought that wouldn't be right.

Is there anything else I should have said to her or done?

Nothing. Unfortunately, the best thing you can so is tell someone you aren't interested and let them go ..

Men need to really understand that when you end it, you close it. You have no right to be in that persons life.

No.  She shouldn't have been on a speed dating activity under the circumstances.  You behaved politely in the moment.  That is all you can do & all that is required of you.   You are not obligated to be the shoulder for a stranger to cry on.

I feel a little better now. It really rattled me and before I went to sleep I kept thinking about her crying and how hurt she must have been. I'm going to try and put it behind me. Hopefully she has friends and family she can talk to about what it. Even though I didn't match with her maybe one of the other guys did.
