Can you choose to love someone?

Can you choose to love someone or not? That's seriously complicated.

There is an experiment somewhere where they set out a whole long series of questions and exercises for two people to do together and suggested that if you could get two strangers willing to do all this, they would naturally fall for each other. The amount of information and intimacy exchanged during those instructions would forge a bond between them. (One assumes that extremely incompatible people would get creeped out during the long list of instructions and just stop rather than completing them.) Now, I don't know how much that REALLY works, but I can definitely imagine that it works for some folks. Being put through intensely emotional experiences together does tend to push people together.

If you want to love someone, and they want to love you, and you're both willing to work on it, generally you can build that together... probably.

Most people got married because they had at least some level of compatibility, after all. It's not hard to imagine that it's possible for many married people to rekindle those feelings if they really work at it.

But can you choose to love ANYONE? eh, I'm not so sure. And can you choose to turn love OFF when it's inconvenient? I'd say no.
