Placed on furlough for 2 months, how likely is it permanent?

It wouldn't hurt to make a check-in call and remind them you're available.

LinkedIn is a great job networking platform. It's led me to many open doors and is vital when hiring.

I was going to call but I changed my mind. It’s obvious they don’t want to bring me back right now

Also, there are only 12 people in my dept from day shift. 12!!! You mean to tell me they “can’t” call me or the other 4 ppl back to work ? That’s absurd! I can understand if their were 50 or 100 people in my dept, but 12!?!?! Give me a break. I’m sure those 7 ppl and the additional 6 ppl from night shift are getting overtime. My supervisor is being a b$&**!

The smaller the company, the tighter the margins.  You don't know that the people called back are getting overtime.  You are assuming.   If your company's sales have plummeted due to the lock down they have no money to pay everyone.

Hiring / firing decisions are rarely personal although human beings do tend do go with the people they like the most. Since you seem to think this is personal & the others are the favorites.  I don't know anybody involved so I'll even assume you are right.  That said, since you are so convinced your manager hates you have you started your search for a new job?  Stop fixating & complaining.  Focus on things you can control like your job search.

I wouldn't get so worried. Millions of people are furloughed. Haven't you been getting full wages? even if you are getting less eg 80%, most people are better off as they aren't spending socialising or commuting.

Furthermore, maybe try not to take it so personally, your business probably doesn't have enough work for everyone. And HR communicating is the normal way: they have to do this furlough thing legally and correctly. From my own situation, I hate it when my line manager wants to update me, as frankly he doesn't know what he is talking about regarding the details of the scheme.

Personally, I would rather be on furlough than working. Plenty of time to work when we go back. I know people who are working at their company, or even at home: I am earning the same as them but I am free from work, I can lie in, I can exercise, read, even learn something :)

Yes its a different discussion as to how many of us will be made redundant as businesses go bust or downsize.

The decision doesn't rest with your supervisor.  It rests on upper management and revenue stream.  When they can bring everyone back is determined by how quickly their revenue stream is restored to the point where they can bring everyone back.  What does your company do?  And, it's smart of them to bring in a few who are willing to work some overtime if necessary for a while.  They are saving quite a bit on payroll tax even for 5 people, thereby, making it so that there is some funds retention which in turn will make it possible to bring back the rest of the people sooner than later.  If the people who are working are putting in so much overtime as to pick up the slack for 5 missing people, that's not likely going to be sustainable.

Well, HR called me and looks like I’ll be returning to work next week. And I know I was probably the last one that they recalled. Geez. I bet the people that weren’t furloughed and kept working probably want some vacation time now that everything is reopened, so now they will need a warm body like me.

I’d go find another job right before the unemployment checks ended.  If they call you back, you can always quit the other job.
