What should I ask for in a negotiation meeting?

Recommended Posts

So I am in leadership. The other leading hand just quit leading hand because of the stress of the job , and will now just be a normal worker.

I am feeling really awkward by this and to be honest a bit stressed. They will get someone new though. I want to go and have a meeting to tell them my terms.

I want more money for a start. How do I manage someone who has been a manager with me. It's been a highly stressful week.

I don't know what are reasonable terms to ask for. I'm thinking when my supervisor isn't in, I want supervisor rates.

I want Christmas off. And I will only work one public holiday a year.

I feel awkward about this but my boss is on the warpath and if I'm going to have this stress then I think I deserve more money.

What else can I say?

You need to do the math.  Show them what you have accomplished.  Compare that to what is being asked of you.  Explain to them why it's in their best interest to give you what you want.  If you can show how them giving you more money increases productivity or profitability you should be able to get what you want.  If you can't explain why you are worth the increase or the accommodation, you will be seen as whiney & entitled.

Good luck.

You tell them exactly what you need to do the job, be polite about it. Don't set it up where it sounds like either you get the job or you leave. set it up where if you want me to take this hellish job this is what I need or I am perfectly happy doing what I'm doing now. You should certainly be able to negotiate those small things you want that aren't about salary. I've done it almost every job I've had.
