There are lies, damn lies and statistics. I love statistics :bunny:

He is applying proper mathmetics and formulas to the issue of how long it takes to get over someone..

Nailing down all the variables and unknowns

Nooooo. Maths, formulas, x and y attaching themselves to numbers and brackets on either side of a line. I'm just not the type. My mother loves that kind of thing though, so I'll ask her if she can narrow the square root of broken heart recovery down to its lowest common denominator. Yes I know that doesn't make sense so please don't start explaining why.

Maths. I don't :love: it, but if once you've figured out the right equation I look forward to hearing it explained in the language of Shakespeare.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;

Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:

For never was a story of more woe

Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

ok then, imagine if we were all equipped with the best self-help books and counselling knowledge and we knew the psychology behind break-ups and recovery time. excluding the mathematical attempt going on right now, could these factors reduce recovery time?

Yes. But the efficacy of self help books depends on the person. You can read such a book as a novel more or less, or you can actively apply the ideas from the book to your life, and thus substantially reduce the recovery time.

The mathematical model is only interesting, to get an understanding on how much X, Y, or Z affects recovery.

imagine ditto for having greater insight into relationships in the first place.

In general a positive influence, I expect. But even people who have great insight can make mistakes. In general a lot of people find it easier to point out other people's mistakes, compared to their own mistakes. Again, to model accurately you may have to take in consideration a lot of factors.

That will take a while. :( Society changes faster than proper research into all the variables can be made. Besides, it is impossible to write in the language of Shakespeare nowadays. Or in the language of Dostoyevski, Kafka. So on both accounts, I will have to disappoint you, lindya.

I'm a tearful wreck now Sorry Helena - we were supposed to be cheering you up here. Yes, I need a drink. Someone please email me a shot of vodka to go in my Orange juice.

The wittering stats guy! Did you hear that, d'Arthez?

It is actually :bunny: Although you actually have to turn up to eat there.

No kidding :( When I quoted this, I was reliving all the other sad quotes too, like "If thou be merciful, open the tomb and lay me with Juliet" or "Thus with a kiss I die" :(

The worst bit for me is when Juliet wakes up, saying "where is my Romeo" then gets frantic looking for the poison and tries to kiss it out of his lips... "Thy lips are warm".... she only just missed him :(

i figure everyone could be on 3 continents..US, UK, and me burning the midnight oil in Australia (working the graveyard shift all week)... so given the flying time and the costs involved (where's the stats guy when you need him?) of everyone getting there, double vodkas should at least be on the house.

there's nothing to eat in here at this hour except chips, choc and crappy biscuits. i'd kill for a good thai.

what happened to lindya? i think she left the office early and has gone off for a drink with the bitchy mate after all.

many, many thanks to art_critic, lindya, reluctant romeo, d'arthez (for the unassailable logic) et al for the hugely entertaining exchange yesterday. it was laugh out loud stuff and did my spirits a great deal of good.
